    Hi all,

I've got myself a 1992 citroen XM with the fancy hydraulic suspension, which needs a bit of repairs after all these years. Is there any place in Ireland that still does work on the hydractive systems? All I could find was places in the UK.

Probably best to ask on specialist Facebook groups. Try searching on Facebook for Citroen Ireland etc. e.g.

Can't help with any specialist repair center, but I know of this place in Holland that is a Citroen spares goldmine.

Great find and best of luck with it! Where’d you get it? What engine is in it?

There’s Mark Allen in Rosslare who is a Citroen Specialist and Pat McCarthy in Waterford City, former main dealer.
    Best of luck with it!

@GavPJ do you know any other specialists?

    Cui bono?

I can vouch for Pat McCarthy in Waterford. Ex dealer from way back and a nice bunch of people.

In the Leinster area, the guys in Sur Le Pont on the Kildare/Meath border know their old Citroens too.

Be great to see an XM saved and back on the road.

It's a 2.1 TDI in it, one of the last with no egr or other emissions stuff, Bosch mechanical injection so it'll run on anything. Bought it off a guy in cork who got it from the North. Hasn't ran on the road since 2016/17. Engine fired up on the second go after pouring diesel in the filter canister.

What a car!!!! It must be the only estate left in Ireland.

Only 127 total XM’s of all varieties left with an MOT in the UK so I’d be very surprised if we have double figures of roadworthy ones here. None at all showing on the NCT stats.
I’ve only seen one in the last few years. Slowly sinking into the ground in a yard in rural Wexford. It’s there since at least 2014 according to Streetview

    Cui bono?

What a great find. Used to be a Citreon owner myself. Two BXs and a Xantia estate. Hydraulics were always a bit of a pain, so if you're getting them done, get it all done, there are no shortcuts.

Great car for frustrating the clampers. Just park, lower it fully, lock her up and walk away. 🤣

The XM is one of my all time favs. The hydraulics were loaned to Rolls Royce and Bentley in the 80's and 90's so if you can't find a citroen specialist they might be the next bet

    Hi OP,

I'm envious - I often thought about getting one of those back in the day. I had a BX estate for a while, it broke my heart but I loved it.

Ken Fildes sadly passed away a few years ago, but I believe his garage is still in business. Might be worth a call  (01) 821 4477.

+1 on the Dolphin Motors recommendation.

    Best of luck!

Is that the one near Clonroche on the left heading to New Ross? Been there a long time!

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,434 ✭✭✭hoodie6029

    That’s the one exactly!

You rarely see these in France let alone Ireland

I've got it booked in to sur le pont in two weeks, hopefully it's just something simple like a rusted out line and all the valves are fine.

I fully intend on getting it back on the road, though insurance might be an issue I worry.

Id say you'll have no problem insuring it as a classic so long as you already have a private policy in your own name.

The best of luck with it and please keep us posted on the progress.

If Sur le Pont falls through, K. Hurst independent is just a few miles away and has decades of experience but not sure if he still works on them as last time I passed I didn't see many in the yard. But here's a Google street view from 2009. I see Xantias.

Michael Linehan in Grange Motors in Cork specialises in Citroens & their suspension systems. I seem to recall he even had the equipment to renew and repressurise the suspension spheres. He worked on a few my (non-hydraulic) Citroens over the years https://www.grangemotorscork.ie/

I could be mistaken but I believe there is also a potential issue with the wiring on the XMs - the looms were manufactured fractionally too short and when the engine rocked on the mounts it pulled on the wiring, chafing it as it passed through the bulkhead.

Best of luck with the restoration.

I'll look into that wiring. I know the estates had an issue with the wiring in the bootlid being too short and breaking.

Dropped it off at sur le pont today. Awaiting the verdict on how badly rotten it is (hopefully not very)
