They were going for the empty spacestation vibe which IMO suits the Alien franchise the best. Think Aliens / Event Horizon. Sure you even have a bit of it with the start of the first Alien film too.

A story about extracting the cocooned alien would be interesting to see alright but a totally different type of film.

Seen it today, thought it was rubbish, didnt bother watching the last 15 mins

I'm sick of movies trying to elicit an emotional response by zooming in on the characters face for 5 minutes, why do modern movies feel the need to have everyone so freaking needy ?

Absolutely tired of unrealistic moronic decisions made by the characters.

char 1 : Open the door to save her

char 2 : If we open the door everyone dies including her

char 1 : I still want to open the door

    who writes this sh1t

really enjoyed this, 3rd best film of the franchise after aliens and alien, nothing ground breaking in it for the alien universe lore, its pretty much a mix of the first two films with a dash of Prometheus, i liked that it links prometheus/covenant to the original alien universe via the black goo (although from what I've been reading online I'm one of the few that liked this), if they make a follow up to this i can see it also being used to complete the 'david' android arc from those two films aswell.

the cgi Rook was absolutely horseshit, weird for a film that looked incredible they couldn't get this to look better.

the xenomorph was underused i thought, but the facehuggers made up for it

    Watched it last night.

Started off good but then it lost my interest as it went on. I started thinking about Formula 1 and all of a sudden there's a goofy looking hybrid yoke on the screen - made me laugh.

The callbacks to earlier films was cringe.

Also, the Xenomorphs didn't seem menacing for some reason. This is an impressive feat, seeing as they are terrifying in concept

The cast were alright but the franchise needs a proper strong lead character not some wee college girl.

I enjoyed it. It's a simple setup, it looks great, the characters were decent (Andy was great), the alien action was up there as a mix of Alien and Aliens. I liked the tie in to Alien, they made that work very organically (though the Alien cocoon was a bit of a macguffin). I also liked the tie in to Prometheus and Covenant. It's a simple nod that does a lot of work to connect the two sets of movies. The inclusion of Ian Holm helped to connect to the period the original movie was set it, it's just a pity the CGI was wonky.

It's not without problems though. When the facehuggers first appear, I figured the two people inside were goners but they both made it out, swatting them away easily. It took away some of their menace. They also got that one off pretty easily. It also worked better in "Alien" mode rather than the more action-y "Aliens" mode. They were taken out very easily in the zero-gravity scene. Compare that to the ambush scene in Aliens where an entire military unit are overwhelmed.

As for the final hybrid. I'm a bit meh about it. I like the tie in to Prometheus again and the evolution of that idea, but I don't think it added anything that a stowaway Xenomorph couldn't have achieved.

Crazy how terrible this thing is. The story and sequetial editing is absolutely shocking bad. This seems to be a trend with a lot of these current hyped Hollywood productions, serious effort is put into the aesthetic look of the world these things are set in, which look fantastic, this, the last Batman effort, Dune part 2. All of that aesthetic world building and creation is great, but the story and the writing is absolutely shocking off the scale bad, which ultimately destroys the gorgeous look these productions execute. A lot of these things are too influenced with trying to create the fictional world as the main character by putting all the effort into that, and the dramatic characters are left looking like idiots because no effort is placed upon their story, situation, execution, resolution and dialogue. Might work in a computer game but not on film.

I watched this before the weekend and it isn't great. It looks good, has some good effects (bar the daft inclusion of a certain Android) but it is essentially a hollow cover version that doesn't do anything original with itself to justify its existence. They touch the main beats of all films, and ends up watered down for it. Everything is rush rush rush to the next set piece or character death. The camera always has to keep moving for fear of death, and the editing to match, and it makes you miss the flow of the original Alien. The facehugger impregnation to fully grown alien is crazy even by movie logic.

The overly English lads wrecked my head in the trailer, and lack of characterisation didn't improve matters when watching the movie. The prat of a cousin was overly antagonist for poor writing's sake, and sums up how badly written the whole thing is. As noted on a recent post, creating tension because of idiotic character choices is not tense, it's just dumb.

The MVP is Andy. The actor playing him is the best part of the movie, and makes you sympathise more for an android than any human character on screen.

Did anyone else get a "Spitting Image" vibe from the guest android?

I was getting a "David Zucker" vibe from the whole lot of it, never mind the walloped android. At one point while I still had some interest, I was sure Frank Drebin would show up.

It is a good film and promising in parts, but there's no denying that Fede's "original" pitch was commandeered by producers.

I'd have no problem with a sequel but the likes of Scott need to take a step back.

I can't quite believe how bad this movies was, I had thought I read it was alright somewhere. I had to watch it in 3 sittings as there was only so much of it I could take in one go.

It was such a insult to the original that I think the producer doesn't have any love for the original and was just taking the piss of it.

I wish to wipe it from my memory banks and go back to thinking Alien 4 was the worst one.

Watched the entire franchise recently over the last few weeks, including Romulus as the cap stone. Romulus was ok, the ending sadly went off the rails and let the whole thing down. The original 3 movies are vastly superior to anything that came after them (Alien 3 Assembly Cut is the version to watch), with Alien Resurrection being by far the worst one for me. Prometheus & Covenant, meh, not really sure I like the angle they're pushing for the Xenomorph backstory, seems like a story that didn't need to be told imo. Romulus sits squarely in the middle of it all, enjoyable start, but fell apart nearer to the end.

If you've seen Alien and Aliens you've seen this. Another rehash set on a spaceship with nothing new to give.

That's it really I guess… I still really enjoyed it just for the world, and the design of everything though, and the story zips along quickly enough that it doesn't dwell on the sillier elements. Far from a classic, but for sci fi fans well worth a watch still.

I watched it last night; it wasn't bad I suppose, I'd maybe give it 6/10…but it was almost (almost) completely devoid of any real tension, other than maybe the zero G bit, I thought.

Superb movie, the 3rd best of the franchise in my opinion.

I liked the first ending but not the second part as such.

Back to basics, it was a decent Aliens film.

    Rather enjoyed that.
