He wot did the Evil Dead remake; as I said elsewhere my expectations for this franchise have become nonexistent, so if this is even half decent it'll be quite the achievement.

A recent rewatch of the Assembly Cut of Alien 3 made me appreciate it in a new light; a recent rewatch of ...Resurrection confirmed it was always garbage.

And coming to cinemas too, which is nice.

Yeah, nobody should get too excited of course. But FWIW I did enjoy the teaser more than I expected to; gory scenes, some body horror, a cast of relative unknowns, claustrophobic setting, and fast as **** facehuggers.

Alvarez apparently spoke at length with both Scott and Cameron (kinda hoping he paid more attention to Cameron to be fair lol).

When's the last time you watched it? Cos it hasn't aged well and I went into a rewatch with an open mind. It's not just a bad Alien movie but just ... weird. The Joss Whedon humour really underbaked, and some odd moments like Looney Tunes gore.

Will be exciting to see the utter stupidity in some of the crew's decision making in this installment. By the time the next trailer comes out imagine we will be able to pick out the Ripley-esque heroine.

Its not great, he also lifted a lot of ideas for the movie and reused them in Firefly. I am not a fan of Firefly.

Ya, I like the look of that. While ED remake I thought was overrated, it had some exceptional gore, gore and Aliens, yes please.

I was never that much of a fan of Whedon even in his heyday, but it is weird to see this first & deeply embryonic script from him; all the tropes and tics he later used (and caused a flood of imitators, oof) are there but few of them worked. Of course they didn't work in the Alien universe either but that whole production was just weird.

Alien has turned out like Terminator.

First 2 films were great.

Rubbish after that.

Loads of trailers giving most of the film away.

I remember coming out of the cinema after Alien 3, biggest let down ever.

Firefly yeah that's certainly the most obvious, but also things like his scriptwriting style; the undercutting tension with a joke - but not honed as well as it would become.

But the best script in the world wouldn't have survived the total inappropriate choice of Jean-Pierre Jeunet as the director.

Seems that, where possible, Alvarez has used practical effects including puppetry and animatronics. He even went so far as to re-assemble the original Stan Winston team that built and operated the Xenomorph queen in Aliens.

My one growing concern on this movie is Alvarez cranks up the gross gore, cos his films have tended towards it; whatever else the movies at their best were they weren't that gory either. Moments of sudden violence and occasional android bifurcation sure, but rarely that kind of gazing you get either.

Absolutely, and famously the actors didn't expect it so the reactions were genuine; but you still saw very little. Alvarez has an eye that tends to linger and gawp in a manner that's a bit too gross for me

That's a well edited trailer, I'll give it that. I maintain a little caution Alvarez is gonna lean way too far into gross, leering gore over proper scares. And the trailer didn't quite do anything to alleviate that sense.

Also interesting how for such a high profile franchise I couldn't pick a single name from the cast.

Oh yeah, she was in Civil War as well, also looking intermittently traumatised by events around her, ha. For sure it's a budget saver you'd have to imagine, and also skirts that classic giveaway "problem" where the one Big Name is sure to get offed in the First Act.

I like that they included he "in space no one cna hear you" looks good , i do get a sense there could be a lot of action scrambling which i'd prefer less of for tense buildup. not fussed on the no big names on it.

They certainly seem to be putting the Face huggers front and centre of all the trailers and posters arent they . Feels like that's how Fede is looking to differentiate this film from others in the franchise. Expanding the tension of the medbay face hugger scene in Aliens across a whole film. Mine the bodyhorror aspect of being mouth raped by a spider rather then merely hunted down by the big guy.

Alien 3 is not awful, it is just that it was very different to Aliens. I hated it too initially but have since watched it more than once and enjoy it now.

I have mentioned it a few times, but there is a version of Alien 3 called the Assembly Cut. It is a much better story IMO, and is what should have been released.

Personally love the aesthetic of A3 a lot, Fincher did a pretty solid job, especially when you consider how sick he was during filming.

The Alien 3 Assembly Cut had no involvement from David Fincher but he did apparently give it some vague blessing, FWIW.

I found it a much better feature and worth checking out. It made the whole thing much bleaker, and a more cohesive creature TBH (fixing many aspects like Paul McGann's character suddenly disappearing), without being able to fix all the flaws.
