Hi iv a 2012 skoda octavia and i keep getting a P0403 fault code which is exhaust gas recirculation A control circuit. Had the egr cleaned before and wasnt cheap. Just wondering what the problem may be and how much would it cost to fix?

I would Imagine new egr is needed if 2.0tdi there very expensive up around 1000 + euro

Means ECU (engine control unit) is reprogrammed and not using EGR valve at all. Not sure if NCT ever check for this though…

Dont think NCTchecks for it yet but thats not saying they wont in 2/3 yrs

Was on the news a few weeks ago that they need to start checking for this.

Car will pass NCT with EGR delete, its just commanded closed in all circumstances through coding, essentially "deleting" it but it's still attached to the engine and no way of being able to tell.

I believe getting the EGR deleted can be bad for DPF so both are usually done together.

Don't have any first hand information on that though so could be BS. Worth looking into maybe.

This is what people do on a car approaching end of life when don’t want to spend on new egr or dpf. Risk is that if NcT rules change you won’t have more than a year from your money spent on coding it out , before you are forced to fix it properly.

Good point, however spending 1000 euro on a new egr is a bit excessive in my opinnion.

If the NCT do bring in more strict rules surrounding emissions it'll only be for the most modern Euro 6 emissions cars.

Diesels only get smoke tested anyway

There has been "talk" of NCT checking for deleted EGR/DPF for at least ten years now!! I can't see it being this year or next, they won't add to the current mess.

Defeating the EGR will probably take some load off the DPF since the exhaust will be running hotter and that means cleaner. Defeating the EGR should be a relatively easy job since it should be entirely software based, defeating the DPF involves physically boring the DPF and then altering the software as well.

A well functioning diesel will be clean burning and not present any emissions issues, but the problem is by the time your EGR or DPF start playing up there is generally an underlying engine issue causing it which means that defeating either the EGR and/or DPF will generally result in significant exhaust emissions - which will then be fairly obvious to any NCT tester. A smokey engine with the DPF in place will not smoke out the exhaust it will just be in a perpetual DPF regen cycle which will piss diesel away at an alarming. rate.

Its not physically removed, only the insides of the DPF are removed and the outer shell remains.

No - they have no way of doing that since it is a sealed unit, they literally bore out the matrix and replace the housing back so nothing is obvious on the outside. What they would be looking for is soot at the end of the exhaust - a sure sign that the DPF has been removed and a reason to fail you.

It's a legal requirement to have a functional DPF (if one was fitted at the factory) so any evidence that you have removed it is a reason to declare the car unfit to drive. It may not happen very often but the law allows a car with a DPF removed to be declared not fit for use and illegal to drive.

Yes, it will never be the case where they fail people because they have soot in their exhausts. Its not conclusive enough

No, the filter inside gets shredded to pieces usually by means of a very long wooden drillbit, and taken out.

Once it's done it's done. No turning back unless you buy a new DPF
