The night sky is just wonderful tonight. We have a crescent moon to the West while Orion is commanding the East. There are also several streaks of high wispy cloud running E-W which make the whole scene magical. These are the best days and nights of winter.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth house?

Lashed rain in Sligo this evening but temperature was 0.8c so could get icy.

Radar no good for here as precipitation not showing even though we had many showers today.

Isn't it strange that 20km south of coastal Sligo we had a beautiful, cold, sunny day with no rain. Hovering just above freezing now and wispy cloud cover.

    S Sligo 152m asl.

Yes quite potent the cold out tonight. -3 at Moore Park by 9pm is quite rare indeed. Anything below about -4 in the Cork area is about a 1 in 5 year weather event!!

I would think with mainly Northerly winds we could well see temps down to -7 by Thursday night...

I like to look at this site for a rough illustration of the temperatures across the country (and further afield). The data is supplied by Met Eireann stations and other local weather stations.

I have to say I'm heartily sick of this weather watching. The 'will it or won't it' is draining my lifeblood! I thought I'd wake up to at least a frosty wonderland this morning on the coast of NW Donegal but even the Derryveagh mountains were barely white.

Got a bit of wet sleet around lunchtime and now it's just a cool cloudy night. The Met Eireann app keeps enticing me with snow icons and then removing them. I've provisionally booked a hotel in Dublin Wed night for an early morning flight but now I'm just feeling like it's an overreaction. Somebody please restore my confidence!

I know the feeling. I was the same last winter when a lot of the country got days and days of hard frosts, ice days, freezing fog, hoar frost, beautiful winter wonderland stuff, but here in the east it was just cold damp misery with a few wet snow flurries here and there.

I missed an early morning flight out of Dublin on Friday due to traffic on the way in..I wish I had booked a hotel

Arome got it spot on by the look of it. Munster with the coldest temps as the mild sector impacts the northern half of the island by 7am

Not really. The 2 areas often get different weather's e.g a very high chance ye guys will see some snow this week but also today was different as light nw airflow meant showers literally died out on hitting the coast.

-2.4C at the moment south of cork city, lowest it got last night/morning was -2.6C at 8:30am!

I was thinking of that week of rime/hoar first in December 2022. It was magical. Those scenes will get rarer and rarer so we should appreciate any cold spells we get.

A light dusting of snow on Nephin Mountain (806m) here in Mayo today. I drove through a light enough snow shower near Charlestown in the east of the county at about 8.45 am this morning. Not much in the way of precipitation here near Castlebar this afternoon though apart from the dying embers of the very odd shower as they fizzled out.

The day finished off with a nice sunset though which has been one of the upsides of this reasonably settled spell in these parts that has lasted just over a week.

Not settled at all here in the past week. Light drizzle most days and colder drizzle tonight with temperature hovering just below 1c. A waste of time this spell. Just cold feet and wet everywhere here.

Those icon forecasts are useless with Met Eireann, it's telling me it's 4°c at 11pm in Galway City, when in reality it's about -1°c.

What a mediocre spell this has turned out to be. Even after the chances of decent snow were dashed, I thought we might see some decent low temperatures due to clear skies, the origin of the airmass and being in mid January.... but no. We should be seeing widespread -5, -6 ,- 7. Disappointing.

Some convective activity over the Midlands. Wasn't expecting that. Looks very light stuff though. Winds starting to shift ESE now
