It sure is, self indulgent nonsense from him , if he isn't 100% fit he shouldn't be next or near the Olympics and should have backed away from being selected. He's already won 3 Olympic medals so he doesn't need it anymore and considering selection for olympics is limited the he should have allowed someone else the opportunity rather than chancing taking a place and not being able to play.

Frankly his entire long goodbye over the past couple of years has been utterly tedious.

A very reasonable perspective. But I'll be far more likely to watch Andy Murray play 1 match than Norrie/Draper/Evans play further.

Djokovic and Nadal drawn to play each other in the second round of the Olympics, though the word on the street is now that Nadal may pull out of the singles and focus on the doubles. I suppose getting rinsed by Djokovic on what is essentially home turf probably isn't that appealing.

Nadal has better form lately, and how well joker's knee will stand up. Unlike Nadal to duck a battle.

Battle of the oldies in the next round. Combined age of 75 and a chance for Nadal to even up the H2H.

Murray and Evans doubles match was a great watch! They saved 5 (I think) match points in the third set, but have somehow fought their way through!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 565 ✭✭✭tiegan

Yes, amazing they were down 8-3 in the tie break set - some comeback for them!! And I loved the kids in the crowd afterwards shouting for Andy to autograph their balls - great result!!

Will be interesting to see if Nadal has anything to hurt Djoko with here. On paper it should be a straightforward win for Djoko, but I wouldn't be surprised to see Nadal lifting his level enough to cause him trouble one last time.

    Snap.

Djokovic steam rollering him in first set so far. 5-0

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,855 ✭✭✭BionicRasher

Made short work of that. Don't think we will see Nadal again here in singles

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 742 ✭✭✭ledwithhedwith

yeah wasn’t much of a competition, nice to have 10/15 competitive minutes at the end but yeah the end is nigh Rafa.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,551 ✭✭✭✭josip

Wawrinka is on his way home, but he put up a decent fight against Popyrin. We'll find out later today if Murray and Nadal will be following him. Along with Djokovic, that's four great players for whom this is the last Olympics. But only 3 of them have gold medals 😀

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,551 ✭✭✭✭josip

Alcaraz and Nadal on the way the way out of the doubles now also by the looks of it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,143 ✭✭✭✭gmisk

Murray and Evans are tomorrow I think. Fritz and Paul will be tough.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,074 ✭✭✭nomdeboardie

11am I think - bah! Anyone know a way to watch online? I've just discovered I can get BBC Red Button on TV, but will have only internet at work. No chance RTE will screen it, I assume

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,855 ✭✭✭BionicRasher

    Discovery plus show everything

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,074 ✭✭✭nomdeboardie

Thanks - I registered now to see free content - remains to be seen if that included the tennis

Its about €7 for a months sub - well worth it to get all the streams.

Some other good stuff on it as well

Zheng takes out Swiatek, not many will have seen that coming.

Hoping Vekic wins the other semi, could be a good final on Saturday.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,143 ✭✭✭✭gmisk

Swiatek was pretty poor versus Collins to be fair

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,143 ✭✭✭✭gmisk

Looks like Raducanu made a decent decision going to Washington she is into quarters.

Carlitos whips FAA 1 and 1.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,551 ✭✭✭✭josip

Well that's the Gold medal sorted. The others are fighting amongst themselves for the base metals.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 565 ✭✭✭tiegan

Don't bet on it - would love to see Alcaraz get gold, but Djokovich want's it soooooo badly!! Hoping that Musetti might provide a contest in their semi later today

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,143 ✭✭✭✭gmisk

Flicked over to the Raducanu match she was up a break in third set against Badosa, then had a bit of a collapse, serve erratic. Badosa then serves for the match...Raducanu then breaks! Then she is broken again and out.

Fair play to him, played some unbelievable stuff today.

Surprised when I saw the result , I'll be honest I thought he was going to struggle to ever beat Alcaraz again and he'd only win anything major if he avoided him.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,548 ✭✭✭✭SlickRic

If he wasn't generally considered the GOAT before today, he will be now.

same! I’d say the best of 3 nature of it probably helped but didn’t think he’d be beating him again.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,551 ✭✭✭✭josip

Watched it in the car between motorway stops in Germany, was emotional. Feel sorry for Alcaraz, but he'll have more opportunities. Was a gap in the CV, more than GOAT defining, but nice to have it filled all the same.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,855 ✭✭✭BionicRasher

    Amazing match.

Delighted he now has a gold. Carlos will have many more attempts at Gold and might one day equal the various records but Novak is Definitely the GOAT......for now

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,283 ✭✭✭Royale with Cheese

Even if Alcaraz racks up 25+ slams (and that's a big if), unless he has rivals of the quality of Federer and Nadal like Djokovic did then I don't think it should be held in the same regard.

Djokovic is the GOAT by some distance, the fact that he can still beat these top young lads so many years past his peak is just phenomenal:

    24 slams

    40 masters series

    7ATP finals

428 weeks at world number one

    Olympic gold

Only player to win full set of masters series and done it more than once

Winning record against all his rivals

Only player in open era to hold all 4 slams simultaneously

    Davis cup winner

    He is an absolute phenomenon!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,030 ✭✭✭Slashermcguirk

Also agree with Royale with cheese, djokovic achieved all this in the era of Federer and Nadal. The only real rival for alcaraz now will be sinner. The competition now is nowhere near as strong. Djokovic at olympics just won gold medal not dropping a single set and beat the likes of Alcaraz, Musetti, Tsitsipas and Nadal.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,551 ✭✭✭✭josip

Sinner, Zverev and Medvedev all playing in Montreal this week, gotta pay the bills I suppose.

Alcaraz and Djokovic understandably skipping after going all the way in Paris.

Can't see Sinner being dethroned as #1 before year end.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,143 ✭✭✭✭gmisk

Sinner knocked out by Rublev in three sets, in fairness looks to have been struggling with his hip.

Tsitsipas drops father as coach. Should have done it years ago

I've seen this movie before, don't think they'll be long reuniting.

Jessica pegula wins the Canadian open beating Amanda Anisimova in three sets 6-3 2-6 6-1

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,143 ✭✭✭✭gmisk

Battling win for Jack Draper against Jaume Munar, he looked absolutely wrecked at stages, physically he still isn't there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,143 ✭✭✭✭gmisk

Draper with a win against Tsitsipas.

    Ruud or Auger-Aliassime next

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,143 ✭✭✭✭gmisk

Alcaraz knocked out by Monfils in Cincinnati...played very poorly and smashed his racket to bits at one stage.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,551 ✭✭✭✭josip

Cincinnati does bring out the racket smashing side of him.

Very poor form from Drapper to claim he wasn't sure. There's no way he couldn't have known he hit the ball twice.

Edit: sorry my mistake. I see the ball hit the court off the racquet and bounced over.

Oh boy. Jannik Sinner failed a drug test twice in March but wasn't suspended and is now cleared.
