Is it possible to monitor the success of a podcast in terms of listeners? Or is this information only held by the podcaster themselves?

This I would like to know (and might have even asked it myself a while back), as it would be very interesting if its the former..

The YouTube figures will be public at least.. but I'd imagine of podcasts going out on multiple services, Youtube would account for the least, particularly if not overly visual based.. (be bad enough listening to him, than looking at him as well).

Compared to RTE it's practically nothing anyway.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,243 ✭✭✭Brian Scan

That's very likely, but the assertion was that he was doing it for nothing, not practically nothing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,884 ✭✭✭yagan

And just to be clear an opinion that he isn't being paid is not an assertion. It's an assumption, just as the belief that he is being paid is also an assumption.

Would it not be the case that the opinion is an assumption and that giving voice to that assumption, without any qualification, makes it an assertion?

It was never a question of whether he is being paid to broadcast on the radio. The question is who is paying - and I mean in substance rather than merely transactional. As with Evans and Norton the salary cost is largely sponsor covered. Ok Tubridy is much much smaller scale but the same substance deal is likely. No sponsor no show.

If I said he's definitely not getting paid, then that would be an assertion.

If I say, as I often do on this topic that he might not be getting paid then that's merely an opinion, which gives me a wry smile when I see certain posters get defensive about it.

I have no proof he's getting paid.

What I originally commented on was an assertion that he wasn't being paid. I can't remember who made that assertion. I assume that he is being paid because most people are paid for the work that they do, however incompetently, but I have never asserted that he is being paid because I have no proof.

Poor old Tubridy...slumming it with a manky auld podcast....

He has sneered at podcasts and youtubers in the past and now he is scraping the barrell with those same dirty plebs...

On the subject of his pay, I wonder is he being employed by VR as an employee, or are Tuttle Productions Ltd billing VR for his services?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,884 ✭✭✭yagan

Or perhaps seated as part of the paddy power deal.

The hands off approach the station has taken with what audience he targets would suggest a lack of investment on their behalf.

Tubs himself described his sojourn as student lifestyle like.

Yeah I was trying to find out how well Louise McSharry's podcast is doing but couldn't find any figures.

I’d really have to question that 60 minute average unless you’re having an excitable last couple of days on the Tubridy thread.

Good man Dr.Bobson.....60 minutes per day per boards account....adds up to around 4hours of web activity daily...

Not sure about Apple but Spotify has a Top Podcasts page and it is even possible to check the Irish podcasts. There are some strong competitors including Vogue Williams and The Two Johnnies. It is a top podcast/episodes page rather than one with numbers of downloads and listeners.

    https://podcastcharts.byspotify.com/

The main problem for Tubridy is in getting attention for his podcast from the Irish media. His Instagram followers may not directly convert into a podcast audience because it would require a greater commitment of their time compared to simply liking a post. Some of the podcasters on that list have the advantage of being interesting and having an existing audience concentrated in younger demographics. Others have substantial Irish media presences. Even RTE seems to be pushing podcasts now. It is a competitive business and it might be difficult for Tubridy to plug his podcasts on Virgin Radio/Q102 etc as they are not RTE.

When I am between contracts I still get paid by my company. I am the owner of the company that pays me. If I do voluntary work my company still pays me from the money that I leave in the company.

When I have a client then they pay my company. My company keeps paying me whether working or not until the money in the company runs out.

My accountant decides how much i pay myself depending on if i want to spend a lot of time off work or go off volunteering.

Paying himself would chime with tubridys comments about living a student lifestyle in London.

Is the podcast pay per download \ listen or platform advertiser funded through number of listens - anyone know?

The "Paths to Power" podcast with Ivan Yates and Matt Cooper popped up on my Youtube feed this morning. I didn't realize they had a YouTube version. I noticed the channel was called "NK Productions"......

I clicked into it to see what other stuff is on it and who did I see but Mr Tubridy hawking a new pod! And shock of all shocks, it's book related! After cleaning up my spilled tea and loosening my top button, I began to wonder why the international superstar and Irish treasure himself would have his youtube version of the pod on NK's piddling little channel with 1.5k subs. Surely this titan of broadcasting should be starting his own Ryan Tubridy channel where he could fully cash in on his illustrious brand and crucially gauge the reaction from his millions of fans via the comments section? It's a puzzler.

Guests on this? I'm going to wager if you picked a season of very slow nights of the Late Late Show under his tenure, that's the line up. Amy Huberman, Vogue, Alison Spittle, Francis Brennan, Marty Morrisey, etc etc

So Tubs hit me, A book Pod…they bring 3 books? 1 from their childhood, excellent. One that changed their life, ooh niiice and the 3rd?

    "Guess!"

    Made them happy? "No"

OK, made them laugh out loud? "Nah"

    Hmmm a gifted book? "Wrong!"

A book they'd love other people to read? "Ha! No!"

A toilet book? "No, no, no, waay off. A book that made them cry!!!"

Eh, Tubs are you sure that's gonna sound OK on the promos? Have you listened back to yourself saying "... a book that made them cry"?. It's gonna be a hard switch in 30 seconds to go from jaunty, to sad and back to jaunty again…are you sure about this?

RT: "Noel, it's a book about their childhood, one about a life changing read and a book about DEATH!"

NK: Ah Jaysus Ryan, you can't call it a book about death. Too on the nose and you don't want to be saying that every episode. Need to keep it light and airey. People have to want to download this thing….."

RT: "Okaaaaay………..erm, how about a book about MISERY!"

NK: "No, again it's too downbeat. We need to keep away from the whole death, misery, illness thing…."

RT: "But……. I love all of those, Noel?"

NK: "Ehhhhhhh, what about 'a book that made you cry'. Would that be a good compromise? You could have on a lot of women and gay men. Happy tears. Tears of joy could be the angle……."

RT: "Brilliant! I love you, Noel"

NK: "I'm off to Aintree. Don't call me for the rest of the weekend okay"

RT: "Okay, buh bye Noel! XXX"
