Given we literally know that the anti-migrant anti-ismalic mob were pushing the vote for Israel on twitter (plenty of links shared here earlier), it doesn't take much to fill in the blanks. I don't particularly it was rigged, but I also don't think it was 'anti bullying' as you say. It was majoratively a 'fck you' to the 'woke' crowd by people who likely weren't otherwise engaged in the Eurovision.

Also, connecting anti-genocide with "hamas loving" is dumb.

UK getting 0 bizarre. Didn’t they score heavily off the public vote last year?

Yeah… quite poetic and thoughtfully crafted stuff all in all i thought! It's one I think i'll find myself returning to over time.

There's a real element of 'right song, right year' with Eurovision. Ireland's problem has been that, prior to Bambi, we haven't sent anything remotely like a song that could ride a right year wave.

There was 37 entries this year. When we last won in 1996 there was 23. There is far more competition now so winning is obviously going to be much harder. People will point to Switzerland's geographically neighbours but before tonight they hadn't won it since 1988. Safe songs might get you out of a semi-final but they'll just leave you on the right hand side of the board on the Saturday night

I don't think there's any likely outcome where expelling the Dutch entry will age well for the EBU and the jury saved them from the consequences of failing to expel Israel destroying the entire contest.

Was watching this earlier …. have some very mixed views of the whole experience ….

First off Bambi Thug did well …. this performer was the anti-Chris Doran/Ryan Dolan and it worked !! … got to no. 6 should have been no. 5 …. come to that later …. it shows at least something other than a poppy boyband song reject will get attention ….

It was nice to see France do so well …. an actual good song and singer …. too often in the past such performers were not rewarded ….

I guess Switzerland and Croatia were always gonna do well …. they are typical EV performances ….

The UK getting 0 from the public vote I find hard to accept …. something fishy there ….

Israel should not even have been in it …. nothing wrong with the song or performer but it gives legitimacy to a terrorist warmongering far right filthy regime …. EV have previously banned Yugoslavia, Serbia & Montenegro, Serbia, Bosnia and Russia from the competition and give Netanyahu's much worse regime a pass? Double standards for sure …. plus how the hell did they get such a vote? …. AFAIAC Bambi Thug came 5th …. Israel should not be in it ….

Netherlands ?? How come the Czech Republic were not allowed enter instead ?? They had the highest score from the semi final once Netherlands were dropped …. the Czechs should have been allowed in ….

Ireland need to remain inventive …. 20 years ago we came almost last with Chris Doran …. 11 years ago we came last with Ryan Dolan and by then the names as well as the performances began sounding the same and all!! …. Bambi Thug offered something different …. it showed the contest that Ireland was no longer the country of safe bland poppy entries and it showed there is a way to winning it ….

Will Eurovision ever just be a music contest? I guess not.

What do you suggest? Perhaps just calling it Eurovision and removing the song contest wouldn't be a bad idea.

If folks cant see past nationalism & its bias, then I think you are very correct.

they effectively ended the true ‘song contest’ part when they opened it up to public vote. A jury of musicians and music experts judging it makes it a song contest, leaving it to all of us unwashed masses makes it more of an interactive pop culture event. I’d say the hugely increased money and engagement of the latter made the decision to switch formats easy.

It’s a bit of a shame alright, but it is what it is, and still fun in its own way..

Indeed. And a very fair assessment!

If we want things judged properly; I guess we need proper judges, afterall.

I hope people enjoyed tonight. That's still the main point of it all.

Just hope that politicians don't use the voting on it and social media trend of voting Israel, as an example for EU Elections disinformation. See my prior post in thread.

@BlueSkyDreams I was trying to construct a post on mobile and typing gave out. I posted what I had and will clarify tomorrow. It's too late now. Just hope I haven't give them Idea to do so.

I agree about Social Media brainwashing, I notice the trend on twitter to Vote Israel (or vote the flag). And the encouragement to do so even from people who don't watch it and think it is a joke show etc.

On laptop now and quoting myself above.

Have a look at this twitter search? If your on it.

well it didn't age badly either. it's not like they ended up at the bottom of the table. It's our best result since 2000. That was a very long time ago.

FWIW, I don't think it deserved to be as low as it was. I rather liked it. But, again, that's me.

I find that there is some irony in people angrily accusing Israel of getting politically motivated votes in a song contest when the primary purpose of opposing Israeli success is politically motivated. They did very well in the semi-finals, finishing with 50% more votes than Switzerland, was that explained purely by politics? Or did they perhaps have a reasonable song? CNN reports that while the Israeli entry was booed, there were more cheers from the audience.

I'm sure every year there are discussions on cases where politics seem to trump quality in terms of voting. Do Cyprus and Greece always vote for each other because of Turkey, because they are culturally similar and are likely to enjoy each other's work? Would Ukraine have really won 2022 with their song if they hadn't just been invaded? (Granted, it wasn't a bad entry, but still). Though Armenia and Azerbaijan are happy to shoot at each other, they seem to have no problem with sharing the stage (Except for the one time that the contest was held in Baku, they drew the line there).

What political boats did Nemo rock? OK, non-binary possibly annoyed some conservative folks, but it's not really a particularly energising subject any more. Yes, they called for a Gaza ceasefire with some others, but they did not oppose Israel's entry, let alone vocally like some other entrants. Nothing good happens from getting involved in politics, unless you're a politician. I wish Bambi the very best in their future career in the Dept of Foreign Affairs, but as for the opportunity to keystone a career as a Eurovision winner, being overtly political at the very best did no harm, and more likely caused some polarisation against. In other words, Switzerland (yet again) played neutrality better than Ireland did.

I wonder will we see Israel's song entering the Irish charts given it's popularity here.

on the question of; “Or did they perhaps have a reasonable song?”

Put simply… no. It’s exactly the sort of song we hear two or three of every year - thoroughly safe, bland, generic, formulaic stuff. This year, it was basically the same thing as Slovenia and Georgia put up. All three fine, nice voices but nothing special. The jury results felt about right - middle of the road fare... that’s just how these types of songs tend to do. “Did they perhaps have a reasonable song” might account for some 50 or 60 points in the public vote, but certainly doesn’t come near explaining them getting a crazy huge 300+. That sort of insane outlier total basically has to be motivated by something else (and we saw the sources of those motivations in no shortage of dogwhistle twitter posts and Time square billboards). Had it actually been a half decent song, it would’ve won comfortably with that extra boost it got for non-musical reasons.

What’s great is that ultimately the winner was decided on more genuine terms, so the other placings will be relegated to footnotes and half-remembered factoids.

Particularly delighted that - like the Swiss - we did well on both Jury and Public scoring, adding a sense of genuine earned legitimacy to our excellent final position. Very proud of our own showing last night.

Well done to all the Irish people who stood up to the anti-Israeli mob 🥰

The anti-Israel gang of wasters do not speak for me 🇮🇱💪

Does the North effectively have 2 entries? The UK and Ireland whereas in the Olympics for example it's Great Britain rather than UK.
