Driving home above 100m and a heavy shower of sleet.

I'm surprised by how cold it has been this afternoon and evening. Isha brought such mild weather, I was taken by surprise by the biting wind this evening.

Agreed. Came home to a colder than expected house too.

I'm the same we couldn't believe it at football training this evening how cold it was, if it's going to be stormy it should at least be mild!

Same. I got caught out by how cold it was. Set to be 15 degrees tomorrow as well another massive change.

Well, today's surprise was the wind. Yes, I knew Jocelyn was coming, but forecasts said rain in the morning, wind arriving in the evening and night. Incredible wind at 7-8am this morning! Along with squalls of rain. Miserable. Bring back the cold!

Today I saw some daffodils starting to sprout and one or two even starting to bloom.

Unfortunately we have a long wait for the cold to come back. All models showing very mild conditions up to mid February. Even the Scottish highlands are set to lose all snow cover within the next 2 weeks.

I noticed today while out driving pools of water returning in fields that had disappeared over the dry spell,it didn't take long for them to return

Is the forecast for the next while mild with rain/drizzle or just mild.

I wouldn’t mind if it was just mild but no rain for a while.

It’s very disheartening when your working outside with the constant rain/ drizzle/ moisture.

The garden is a swamp at the moment also!

Latest runs not looking overly wet for a lot of the country. About average or below for many.

GFS until February 8th showing the SW to get a lot of rain in the next 2 weeks and average for most otherwise.

It’s been interesting week weather wise locally. Snow, red and orange level storm. Back to a bland pattern for the foreseeable.

Despite two pretty decent storms this month the average wind speed is on the lower end of the scale for here in south Dublin. Quite surprised by that to be honest, shows me how my memory of weather in a particular month or year often does not match the cold hard stats.Windwise here 2015 seems to have been brutal but i just remember the heat and the snow years!

Have a weather station?, why not join the Ireland Weather Network - http://irelandweather.eu/

2015 was brutal. Most months on the windy side and what do ya know, that was the year defined by the North Atlantic cold blob. Coincidence? I think not.

Don't have figures for 2023-24 so far minus one station (Belmullet) which is running very slightly windier than last year 2022-23 but that's not saying a lot as that was the calmest since 2010-11!

The moon is absolutely beautiful tonight, so nice to have a calm day after the storms.

I have to say there is a grand auld stretch in the evening!

So nice all week to final come out of work at 5pm and its not dark!

OK it doesn't last long after 5pm but it's only going to get better from here on in!

Seen that on Christmas day here in carrick was so nice

With all the talk about recent storms now subsiding, take care anyone travelling tonight, as there could be quite a dramatic squall line crossing the country which might catch people unawares.

Up to last Friday the 19th Jan my station had recorded 23mm of rain, now slightly above the LTA at my closest station, Cork airport, at 120.1. It's been a very wet week!!

It could be a typical July or August morning out there in Dublin, mild and damp.

Approaching cold front, off the west coast, looks impressive/well defined on satellite.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,067 ✭✭✭.Donegal.

    Tonight

Squally heavy rain accompanied by strong and gusty winds will extend from the west this evening and early tonight. Isolated thunder is possible, with potential for spot flooding and some wave overtopping along west and northwest coasts. Turning cold once the rain clears with scattered showers following from the west, some of them wintry with a mix of rain and hail with some sleet possible in the north. Some of the showers could be heavy and thundery also, especially in the west and northwest. Lowest temperatures of 0 to 4 degrees with fresh to strong westerly winds, reaching gale at times near coasts, moderating by morning.

On Monday afternoon 3 separate houses were struck by lightning in Newtowncunnigham in Donegal. 2 suffered severe fire damage. Strangest thing is neither of the properties were adjoining, up to half a mile apart. I’ve heard of houses being struck by lightning before but not 3 in the same area. Plus it didn’t happen during a summer thunderstorm. Extraordinary event.
