Can any of the Gript critics give an example of anything written on it that was actually not true?

Doubt there isn’t a media outlet in the state that hasn’t made a mistake identification but there’s an allegation they regularly print misinformation.

You asked for an example and you got one.

It wasn't just a mistake. Gardaí had to implement measures to ensure that man's safety. The both sides tactic is inapplicable.

You say that as if it is unique to one side of the spectrum.

    All media is propaganda.

Journalism should be reporting facts and letting the audience make up their own minds.

That idea has long, long gone.

We are told what to think, told who to hate, told what values are good, told what values are abhorrent.

We always will fall for it.

You are classifying reading Gript as knowledge, and reading 'outside the mainstream' news sources in general as information that leads to knowledge. You, like everyone else (including me!), are empirically not well suited to ascertaining credibility. There are famous reputable studies on how individuals in general believe themselves to be uniquely unsusceptible to propoganda or bias.

People who behave and believe like you are the people who read Fox News, the Daily Mail and fall prey to whatever the latest misinformation on Tiktok is, whether you like it or not. It's a common and well-understood pathology.

Not a slur? Wikipedia doesn’t agree

    • Mongrel, a derogatory term for mixed-race people

Now imagine Gript running an article with a quote like that in the headline. I doubt you would defend it

If they’re all about a perfect white Irish race with pure blood then why do they employ Fatima Gunning and Ben Scanlan? Both are people of colour

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 83 ✭✭khamilton

Kind-of. It's related to the 'third-person effect', with a bit of the 'Bias blind spot' thrown in.

I could care less about a definition dug up from Wikipedia.

If you have been following this discussion you should know it's nothing to do with imagining a Gript article.

Read the actual article to discover the real context.

very dishonest if you ask me. Calling any group of people mongrels is a slur. There is no context that makes it ok. Gript have never stooped that low

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,058 ✭✭✭✭odyssey06

    You mentioned wikipedia.

Here is also what they say:

"Although mongrels are viewed as of less commercial value than intentionally bred dogs, they are thought to be less susceptible to genetic health problems associated with inbreeding (based on the theory of heterosis), and have enthusiasts and defenders who prefer them to intentionally bred dogs."

Any objective reading of the article makes it clear it was not intended as a slur. But of course Gript rely on people not reading the article and reacting like this.

People who are determined to take offence will do so, who wont read the article in context in case it removes the pretext for offence. Thats why Gript jumped on the headline and in doing so reveals their dishonest bias.

lol what does posting the above about dogs prove? Yes mongrel is traditionally used about dogs which is why it is a slur when used to describe a group of people. There’s a separate page on Wikipedia for other uses of the word if you’re interested to have a look

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,058 ✭✭✭✭odyssey06

Its obvious you havent read what wikipedia says about mongrel or the actual article you claim to be bothered about

    Completely self discrediting.

Just selective outrage based on a position of ignorance. And exactly the reaction gript were banking on by out of context quoting of a headline. The article punctures the illusions of gripts target demographic.

Again - there is no objective reading of the article that could consider it a slur.

lol so because the Wikipedia page says that some owners prefer mongrels to intentionally breed dogs that makes it not a slur when used about humans. Great logic

    Nope.

Because you havent read the article its discrediting of the claim of slur you are making on behalf of it.

Because you were the one who brought up wikipedia and the full context of information about mongrels on that very site prove it isnt necessarily a slur.

So when you cant cite any actual slur from the article and wikipedia itself contradicts you, you claim has no credibility.

And again - this is the exactly the trap Gript wanted you to fall into by quoting the headline out of context. Gript trying to peddle outrage based on lies.

Or you know you could try reading the article.

the quote you put up from Wikipedia is about dogs. It does not mean that it’s not a slur when used about humans. You’re clutching at straws

and yes I read the article. Absolute garbage. Apparently Irish people were not oppressed and Irish people were colonoisers and agents of the empire on top of being mongrels.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,058 ✭✭✭✭odyssey06

Where does wikipedia state that when used in relation to humans it is always a slur?

    Well?

Of course it doesnt say that which proves you are the one clutching at straws

And the article is a summary of a multi part documentary, from experts, who present the complexity of the Irish people and history. It is based on the latest scientific and historical evidence.

Instead of attempting to engage with that evidence ... the headline is reacted to as a 'slur' and the article as 'garbage'.

Exactly the target audience of gript - those whose positions arent based on expertise, logic, facts, evidence.

A position based on a preference for a history of myth, for the simple over the complex truth and reality.

And that reaction disproves the position being put forward on the thread that exposure to gript's selective presentation of articles is somehow indicative of an open mind.

    The opposite is true.

I already quoted this from Wikipedia earlier. It’s from the other uses disambiguation page, not the dogs page which you keep talking about

    • Mongrel, a derogatory term for mixed-race people

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,708 ✭✭✭Lotus Flower

lol. If they had no people of colour on their staff it would be proof that they believe in pure white Irish or whatever the claim was. But they do and that’s still proof of the same claim. There’s no talking to some people

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,058 ✭✭✭✭odyssey06

They have a disambiguation page because it can have multiple meanings.

Which proves that nowhere is it a given that any and every use in = a slur. Not on wiki. Not on any reputable source. Because its total nonsense just the desperate reaction of those determined to be offended based on nothing. Because of its puncturing of illusions about Irish people and history.

And even after reading the article you were completely unable to offer any explanation as to how its use in the context is to read as a negative.

Completely unable to engage with the scientific and historical evidence.

But gript is supposed to provide a wider view?

Nope. Every post you have made on the subject disproved that.

Where does gript attempt to do it? Instead of trying to whip up faux outrage.

And proving that gript are just peddling a dishonest take by selective quoting out of context.
