I wish our elected officials took as much interest in other insane scenes as they did the riots.

Finglas village brought to a standstill for a funeral yesterday with lads on scramblers. Not a peep from the establishment as there's no D&I points on offer.

I do think it's ironic that the one thing that would address this type of comment is not been advocated for by those who are expressing outrage at the comment.

I wonder if you drew a ven-diagram of those who are expressing outrage and those who indulge in hate speech - how much crossover you would find.

Provoking violence against any group (even rioters) is by definition hate speech.

Hate speech legislation is not discriminatory - it is focused on the intent to cause violence and harm.

if I’m not wrong (I don’t think I am) but is it true that the councillors / TD’s / senators / journalists / media that are proposing , agreeing and voting for this new legislation on speech all have something called “privilege” ? Makes them immune from the effects of the same legislation.

The more I hear about this it is becoming more like a hunger games novel than anything to do with protecting minorities tbh.

Privilege only covers what is said in the dail and is subject to rules whereby by it must be fair and accurate

Well, the training is made available to them. Carr Communications is usually the provider in Dublin. Don't know about Limerick.

Whether they take it up or not is a different story.

do you challenge racism or sexism when it comes your way? do you engage with young people when they display intolerant attitudes and behaviours? what about your own family, do you call out family members if they advocate violent solutions to anything?

blaming everything on the government means you let the government make your choices for you. if you want to live in a decent society you have to play your part in making it decent. it's not rocket science.

Its not the act of rioting and looting that he wants punished with a bullet to the head. Its specifically those particular people who he wants to see laying dead.

Loads think just like him for anybody they perceive to be "not them" (only not as extreme of course). . Thats why the same cohorts who exhibit vein pulsating rage for those louts in Dublin had only apathy for the rioters who robbed looted and killed in the name of BLM. They perceived the blm rioter to be on their side ideologically so their actions were justified.

Human Rights Watch have called the country he hails from, Bangladesh, as being violent and autocratic….. however Ireland is for the most part, peaceful and democratic…. And the riots / protest were not comparable or representative…

Nowt to do with where he’s originally from, he’s been living and working in Ireland for the last 20 years, well integrated enough into Irish society to become a local councillor. I’m surprised you don’t remember his party colleague from the same constituency and his rather public gaffe at the height of the gangland feuds in Dublin and Limerick?

What the councillor said was silly, much like the overwrought hand-wringing and pearl clutching going on in this thread. It was immediately pointed out to him that he can’t be saying that sort of thing, and he withdrew his remarks.

Absolutely outrageous that a public official would make such a disgraceful statement and there are no calls for his immediate resignation.

No excuse for the posts that used vile labels and language about the riots but this was an elected councillor saying that he would like to see our fellow citizens 'shot in the head' or beaten by the public 'until they die'.

A woman who was at that grotesque stabbing of innocent children said 'we are not savages here' and she was right - we have laws to deal with law-breakers. Shooting citizens in the head and public stoning/beatings until death belong to a different culture.

A lack of media training? Please stop with the excuses.

It is, as you say the complete lack of reasonable discussion of these issues. And we know the reason is because its currently being shouted down as racism.

It's common for them to call for executing people by shooting them in the head or getting beaten to death by crowds in the streets? Must tune in more often. After all, they are everyday things in Europe and not at all in other countries in certain parts of the world.

If the councillor really believed what he was saying was acceptable, then I would think he is a long way from 'integrated' or anything else .

On a serious note, comments such as those by Cllr Taludker have no place in our city or our politics. I would hope that Fianna Fail at least take the step of expelling him from the party. Anything less than that is a tacit acceptance of his diatribe.
