There is now a directive in place that means the road sweepers that normally zoom through the streets of Dublin 15 collecting the Autumn leaves from the streets will now cease and work on a parse schedule. Now residents in Dublin 15 are being told to collect the leaves outside their own properties and either place them in the brown bin (which we are now charged for) or contact Fingal Co Co and they will send out free bin bags which will be collected. These are not leaves falling from the trees within people's properties, these are trees that are planted by Fingal on the streets. Time to rattle the councillor's cages

The 'Tree Strategy for Fingal 2022-2032' says:

Leaf Fall: The loss of leaves from trees in the autumn is part of the natural cycle and cannot be avoided by pruning. The composting of leaves is encouraged as a way of environmentally recycling this valuable resource. In addition, the Council organises a street cleaning service which sweeps leaves from most streets and residential roads during the autumn period.

This is the opposite of what you are saying. I am seeing road sweepers cleaning up leaves, even using a special tool to push them into mounds for later collection by FCC.

Email and contact details for the correct department in fingal as its not an easy task to get these bags. I contacted them previously and would only give them to community groups.

It came up in a Residents whatsapp group and I called them yesterday and the information that they told me is what I have posted above. Yes there will be leave collections but only on the main roads. Cul de Sacs, Closes. Courts, Avenues will only have collection maybe once or twice in the autumnal season

In my estate a few leaf mould cages have been installed. I've been adding leaves to them. There should be compost in 12 months time.

With the tiny gardens most people have now, either because they are new-builds with small gardens or older ones with extensions/paving, is there much demand for this compost? Real compost is also a lot different from "potting compost". i.e. looks like "muck" to most people. What happens to the compost if no-one takes it away?

Completely agree. Why should I have to spend my time collecting their leaves? Not only that but it is a hazard for bicycles when wet or frosty not to mention all the drains getting blocked. Given the increase in rainfall lately, they should be doing everything in their power to keep the drains free

If no one takes it away it could be dumped onto nearby areas with trees. In my estate all the cages are beside groups of trees.

I move leaves out of a drain as it benefits me (and also others). I pick up litter as I find it unsightly. I move neighbours' bins off the road to help pedestrians. I report issues to Fingal so that they can fix them, even if the fix does not benefit me.

It is a part of your contribution to the community.

There are many people and groups around Dublin 15 who contribute in that way to the community. Tidy Towns Groups, Residents Associations and Clean-up Groups have all signed up to the leaf mould cage initiative and are doing their bit.

All part of the effort to promote a circular economy and reduce waste.

That doesn't really make sense.

The Council were collecting leaves and composting them for years. Now it appears that they've stopped collecting them (or are doing it less) and are hoping that people will do it themselves. So nothing new there in terms of circular economy or waste reduction.

Leaf mold takes anywhere from 1-3 years to produce compost, and there's a fair chance it'll be a potential nest for rats. It'll be interesting to see if people will be happy with that this time next year.

Those leaf cages are an eyesore. I hate the sight of them in Castleknock.

Anyway, if Fingal wants the trees, they should clean up after them. Same way as I clean up after my dog.

I swept around the drain outside my gaffe and threw the leaves under my hedge.

But I can imagine it'll block drains pretty quick if they're not cleared up.

In Littlepace Hunters Run area of D15, the council came around in the last week and used a small snow plough to push leaves into piles with the assistance of a leaf blower.

They have today gone round with the truck and grabbing arm to take away those leaf piles.

No, they are not. These cages have been left up in all locations. I even walked by a few in Castleknock at the weekend, and there was more rubbish than leaves in it. Just another waste of money.

What makes it worse is that apparently the residents there had been plaguing the Council before that to ask them to remove redundant signal boxes along the road.

The redundant signal boxes have now been replaced by a dozen of these massive cages along the length of Auburn Avenue. Looks terrible, and I get the impression that they aren't moving anytime soon.
