There is no benefit to the accused for pleading guilty to murder in Ireland due to the mandatory life sentence. A guilty plea cannot be taken into account during sentencing.

It's really only if the accused wants to do the decent thing.

It was probably worth taking a chance on it. Needless to say, I'm glad they found him guilty. I hope there's nothing that happened in the trial that can open up grounds for an appeal. It wasn't easy to listen to the defence barrister trying to muddy the waters but he did his best with what he was given. I'd love to see Puska's family done for their part in the attempted cover up but I assume that's not going to happen.

He will get life.

Murder in Ireland is a mandatory life sentence.

Like Graham Dwyer, Puska will only be released if he wins an appeal against his conviction, or if the parole board deem him safe to release, but life sentence prisoners also need sign off from the Minister of Justice for parole to be granted.

From the evidence in court (following young women along the canal that day), it would seem his motive may have been sexual. It appears though the attack didn't go to plan for him and at least one bystander came along almost immediately and saw Puska's face, probably panicking him.

I'm intrigued by how disabled this yoke was. If you look at a map of the he went on his bike that day, he covered a lot of ground. It isn't a topic for this thread but we really need to take a look at what disability is and why so many people are on it.

I also wonder will more stories come out about him being a predator? It seems a bit random that he went into Tullamore on that day and started intimidating women. If it hadn't been Ashling, it could've just as easily been another woman. He had something in mind that day. Was it the only day ever in his life?

There is no point in pleading guilty to a murder charge because it's a mandatory life sentence. It's a rather perverse outcome of mandatory sentencing.

Have to say I was rather disgusted by the coverage of the trial. RTE live as it happens was extremely crass.

Just wondering, not that it necessarily could be a deemed contributing factor, but was there was a suggestion at one point during the case that Puska was of Romany or Gypsy extraction?

No more that other specifically shocking crimes occurring in this country by Non Irish nationals, could it be that there was an element of cultural differentation or a whole different moral code or sense of values at play?

Before I'm attacked by PC brigade, I'm by no means suggesting that certain cultures (as opposed to a depraved individual from that culture) might be more disposed to murder, but that their value or culture system might be more male dominated or chauvinistically orientated so as to make them more predisposed to normalisation of misogony or violence or threatening sexualised behaviour towards women? Is it possible that this may have been a factor in Puska's behaviour, not only towards Aisling Murphy, but to other luckier females he encountered that unfortunate day?

Yes, I meant it in the case that a defendant can always plead guilty and there is always a possibility that (even when plenty evidence against you) you could get away with it..

The correct result, even the judge didn't hold back after the decision was made. To me this is a reminder that nothing will bring her back so I would struggle to call this "good news" but it's certainly much better news than what could have been delivered.

To all the men out there, be prepared to comfort the women in your lives as it is likely to be an emotional day for all women today

Within reason. The Judge is also aware that the Irish taxpayers were funding the whole defence charade.

Some of the stuff introduced by the defence was jaw-droppingly risible. (And we haven't yet heard about the inadmissible stuff which we'll probably read about over the next few days.)
