EV Car choice

Asking this for a family friend.

He has about 35k to play with and wants to buy an electric car.

Shortlist:

• 2021 Volkswagen ID4
• 2021 Skoda Enyaq
• 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5

Which of these is best from a relibailty and even functionality point of view?

Enyaq and ID.4 are fundamentally the same car so are the same from a reliability standpoint. I'd say it's down to personal preference

They only require servicing every two years which is nice

The only mechanical issue I've had with my ID.4 so far is the charge port getting a bit sticky. Apparently my wife hit it at some point so I'm blaming her for it 😂

If the ID.4 has been updated to the latest software then that'll get rid of most of the software issues

Ioniq 5 is better for long distances as it charges faster, and might have the V2L add-on

Honestly, they should all be fine

MG4 is better than them all and he or she could have one new too.

What sort of range do they need? If it's 200km or less than they could wait for the new Citroen e-C3 to come out which should start under 30k. It's a b segment car.

Also you can get a brand new ORA Funky Cat for less than 30k or €200 a month.

BYD Atto 3 is another option and the Dolphin should be out Soon to if its not a big car they want.

Thanks all. They looking for a big enough car to be honest.

They like the look of the id4 but also think the Ioniq 5 is funky. But not sure on its reliability

Have seen a few MG, but don’t know much about ora or byd at all - so again not confident on the reliability or proven record side of things (probably well proven in other countries etc)

Probably wouldn't recommend someone looking at an Enyaq/ID.4 sized car wait for an e-C3, we're thankfully long since past the anything with a battery days and should be drilling into what segment of car a person is looking for.

Has he considered everything else about owning an electric car? Can he charge the car at home and at work? What range does he need? What does his typical commute / journey look like? Making sure he considers all these in advance will help him have a better experience owning an electric car.

I would say he should drive all 3, and figure out what spec. he wants, in terms of driver aids, comfort, etc. Then he can start looking at individual cars.

Oh - and someone will be along shortly to recommend a Tesla Model 3...

As others have said Enyaq/ID.4 are close relatives. Enyaq has a better interior, a bigger boot and slightly better aerodynamics which means it’s fractionally more efficient than it’s VW cousin. Probably better value to be had on a used ID.4 though as they are way more plentiful on the used market. €30K should get you a decent one.

Ioniq 5 has faster DC charging ability and a decent level of standard kit like most Korean cars but it’s looks are very divisive. Difficult to know what way an Ioniq 5 will go in terms of resale but most recent Hyundai cars have held up well. Test drive all 3, that will make your decision easy.

Of the three my preference would be the Ioniq. Not perfect but a great car.

Or add a little to budget and get a far superior Model Y. (Waiting to be shot down)🤣

The missus has one. 😊. She loves it, says the only car she sort of likes better is the Model Y. I try not to disagree with her…🤣.

To be serious though the car is impressive. Not mad myself on all the beeps and bongs, also having to switch on and off and turn on handbrake. Vw better in that respect.

The Ioniq also seems to hold their value, which is not what you want to hear if buying used. She paid €38k for hers new Jan 2022.

My family friend is old school in some ways, he likes physical buttons. Like radio buttons etc and air conditioning buttons, just simple stuff. I told him already that most are touch screen things

I believe all these cars listed are mainly touch screen type scenarios. Press 19 times to turn on ac (slight exaggeration)

I am old school and prefer the simple UI of VW or Tesla.

Possibly because I rarely drive the Missus’s Ioniq with the multitude of buttons. She says it’s easy when used to it…

I drive a Tesla Y but if those where my choices I'd get the Skoda, much better interior than ID4 and be careful with the Ioniq 5 as it may only be the 58kwh battery.

Most of the Ioniq 5’s I see on Carzone etc are 58kwh

bit nothing wrong with this battery size I guess? Like a good sized battery.

The 77kwh are rare and a good few thousand more in price.

This week I’ve been driving the Kia eNiro while I have my tesla on axle stands getting wheels refurbed.

Kia is a decent car, decent spec, good motorway aids (lane assist, car in from warning etc) but my god it handles like a shopping trolley? I’ve forgotten how bad FWD is after having RWD or AWD for years. No grip at all.

Driver profiles doesn’t save the important things. Having to constantly turn on sport, auto hold, lane keep etc

Maybe the simple UI of Tesla (despite what many believe) has spoilt us!

Kia still a decent car for the masses but when you’re used to more, it’s hard.

Why do you think a MG is better product than a VW ID4/Skoda Enyaq?

Is it build quality, battery technology, chassis, ride handling, seat comfort?

For sure. But the wet week really highlighted the lack of control through the FWD system.

Still a great car and we will continue to use it for its intended purpose (taxi).
