It is the same with many sporting events, there's usually 1 (sometimes 2) too many staff involved.

Just have 1 analyst and let them get their point across, or 2 if it is a big game and one of them can give a special perspective on the opposition. I've seen events with 3 and they just get in each other's way.

I've always wondered what do these regional/educational/social affairs correspondents do they rest of the time? Like the education correspondent might be on once every 3 weeks, what do they do the rest of the time? Is this their full time job?

They could do with a lot less presenters and why on earth do they need external guest presenters? Have the staff presenters do more........presenting!

    And pay presenters much less.

The Angelus is to be cut to 9 bongs.

Nationwide to be refocused to SDC and renamed southside.

RTE to stop broadcasting to NI.

2FM DJs to be replaced by ChatGPI.

Lyric FM to be sold off to Brown Thomas.

There's already accusations of RTE not being interested in anywhere outside the M50. I'd imagine that would get worse if they got rid of the regional correspondents.

The plan will surely be published this week or very soon? Not that we can expect much, Remember their dogs dinner 2019 plan ? It was all but dead on arrival, within a week they had done u-turns on selling the RTE Guide, closing lyrics Limerick hq.

I always wonder what the specialist & regional correspondents actually do between times they appear on air. I presume they are tasked with researching and passing on snippets to the RTE newsroom.

I imagine the rte regional correspondents file reports daily on more mundane regional stories that can be used as filler on slow news days. Frequently these go unused. Virgin media news would be similar in this regard.

    MOD EDIT:

Unattributed unlinked news article deleted in its entirety.

Try again posting a short summary in your own words and a link to the original article. “It’s behind a paywall” is not an excuse.

What do they cut other than staff? All their sports contracts cannot be cut without penalty and have to buy in a certain amount of independent produced programming

RTE culling some of their sport X/Twitter accounts. All soccer and rugby coverage to be carried on the RTE sport account. GAA seems to be keeping its own account for now.

Now that the plan has been delivered to the minister, it must be only a matter of hours before it's all leaked to the media

Even if it’s not, if it’s being circulated internally, surely that would include news division staff? And once they have it how can they not report on it, even if they are told not to?

how much do they need to cut costs by? let RTE sort it out themselves...

Six one could be trimmed down significantly. Why do you need two news readers , some one to do the sport and a big couch to loll around on? They could easily do that bulletin in half an hour with one newsreader. Even Sky, BBC and ITV only use one anchor on a bulletin. If you watch 6-1 you can see the articles are only filler once around half an hour has gone.

As regards rte 1 +1 what are they going to save by axing that!

Anyway we'll see what happens I guess.

They can't be just allowed cut whatever they like while still receiving the same (or more!) public funding. They need to agree the range of services they provide in return for that funding. (The quality of those services is, of course, another thing entirely...)

No idea why anyone would waste an hour out of their life every day on that. 9 news gets the job done in 20 mins and tbh there's still some they could trim from that.

When are the +1 channels expected to close?

My definition of needing to cut costs immediately and RTEs are clearly very different.

I doubt if 10% of this will be implemented. If MoS are accurate and the govt hand over TV licence collection to Revenue then compliance with the charge will go to levels not seen previously.

Cutting the +1 channels will save next to nothing in costs so it doesn't matter whether they do it now, in 2028 or not at all.

I don't see how they can hand it over to Revenue to collect unless it's an across the board charge like LPT. Revenue are not going to be sending customs officers around knocking on doors looking for TVs i.e. the ridiculous charade An Post indulge in.

In fairness if this "broadcasting charge" or whatever it's called is levied on every household, the amount should be reduced, there's no justification for giving a massive funding rise to RTE while allowing them to cut services and keep ads.

    Life ain't always empty.

RTE appear to have emailed out to people today encouraging them to fill in their survey.

Havent checked it yet…. so I’m not sure how leading the questions are or how much feedback they actually want. Let’s hope they have a section on the RTE player!

I did attempt to watch something on the player the other day on my smart tv. Got to a couple of minutes in and it kept going to a blank screen, then a blue screen with RTE One logo before looping back to a bit of the programme over and over and over again. I gave up.

The only way cutting the +1 channels will save money is if 2RN are charging RTE a fortune to carry them. But this is just the money being shuffled around between two Cost Centres in the Montrose mother ship. The government should force RTE to provide propper costing for the plan.

When is the money (including lost growth) Michael Noonan took in the Pension Levy going to be paid back?

Love to know how they gathered these email addresses and was consent given to be emailed for this purpose...

You are receiving this email because you are opted in to receive communications from RTÉ.

That's on the bottom of the email. And I did opt in for communications from RTÉ.

  • Registered Users Posts: 822 ✭✭✭decor58

Likewise, I opted in, I get news story and programming emails.

Yes, serious trimming back needed here. Newstalk & Today FM go with one presenter for their evening news shows. Why do RTE need two for theirs on Radio 1? Similar with TV, why all the newsreaders? Look at the way BBC NI do it. Their staff do the news on Radio Ulster (4 to 6) and the same people will also do the main news on BBC1 NI TV which starts at 6.30.

RTÉ will have to keep Saorsat to reach those viewers who have neither Saorview nor subscription TV.
