When you say its not rocket science do you mean you specifically got them to avoid speeding vans?

Came across 2 separate cars at the same junction a while ago. Both bmws, both with extremely grey plates and black lettering. Basically impossible to read the plate on one of them.

I've actually passed through 2 separate garda checkpoints in the last week, you'd like to think that if those cars went through one they'd be pulled up on it, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

Vanity plates are legal in the U.K. so the plates that look like that are almost certainly legal.

In addition, every U.K. plate must contain details of the garage that produced the plate and there are severe fines if they don’t check the official documentation and produce illegal plates.

There was a famous law enforcement crackdown in New York where the Police were instructed to catch and fine people jumping the stiles in the subway system. It was criticised as being a massive waste of Police time until it was revealed that once the Police checked the ID of the people they caught, those people also had an extremely high rate of other criminal activity and often had outstanding arrest warrants etc

I suspect that a crackdown on cars with such illegal plates here would also reveal large numbers of the drivers of those cars don’t have insurance and/or motor tax etc and that some of those drivers are also “of interest” to AGS for other matters.

Nope, I said illegally spaced plates. They are definitely illegal and if caught 3 times the plate can be confiscated. Here is an example of an illegally spaced plate. Very common in the UK:
