I only learnt to drive in the past few years.

I currently have an 08 1.4 VW Golf with 263,00KM on the clock.

I know it's not the best car in the World but with the price of cars I can't be bothered changing.

It's been in our family since 2011 it was purchased with 49,000km or 59,000km.

Apart from the gearbox and clutch needing changing at 100,000km it's been fairly well behaved.(Touch wood).

What kind of car do the After Hours users drive or have driven?

My partner and I share a 1996 aquamarine Nissan Micra, we’ve had it for over ten years.

I believe that it’s the secular equivalent of a sin to blow a fortune on a new car every year, like so many primary school teachers and well-to-do professionals like those do. A ten-twenty year old car is just as good for most ordinary users’ purposes to be honest. New cars are mainly a vehicle for tacky bragging.

Best motor I ever druv (sic) was a red soft-top Ford Mustang, rented at LAX & hammered all the way to Vegas. A dark desert highway, cool wind in my hair. Never got the smell of those coolitas, but, boy, was it fun.

A relation left me their car in their Will that they “loved”

I despise it, it’s a plasticy piece of junk, makes me mad every time I have to use it. I’ve taken to cycling at times to avoid being stuck in its hideous beige interior.

I would be disowned if I sold the phcuking thing so thinking an accident, burning it or organise some low life to take it and joy ride it into a river

    Mazda mx5 at the moment.

    A rental.

It's a poor mans sports car, all show and no go.

It's also the most impractical car I've ever driven. If I picked up someone at the airport they'd need to make a choice, either I bring them or their luggage. Not both.

History of all the cars i've owned since I first started driving in 1997:

    1. 1983 Nissan Micra 1.0L - an absolute banger but got me on the road and kept it for 7 months.
    2. 1988 Nissan Sunny 1.3L - upgrade from the Micra - a UK import and a great reliable car kept it or 1.5 yrs
    3. 1993 Ford Escort 1.3L - worst car i've ever owned - gave me nothing but problems. Got rid of it after 2 yrs.
    4. 1998 Nissan Almera 1.4L - solid car but boring and bland to drive - had it for 3 years.
    5. 2001 Toyota Corolla 1.4L - had the liftback 1.4 petrol model, probably the most reliable car i've ever had. Had it for 4 years.
    6. 2007 Toyota Avensis 1.6L - upgraded from the Corolla when kids came along - hard on petrol though. Kept it for 6 years.
    7. 2010 Nissan Qashqai 1.5D - needed a bit more space as kids got older - got bored with it after 2 years and sold on.
    8. 2010 Audi A4 2.0D TDI - my midlife crisis car - a UK import kept it for 5 years. Nicest car i've ever driven and had all the gadgets.
    9. 2016 Toyota Rav4 2.0D (Current) - practical SUV for all our needs - solid and dependable. Have just over 2 years now and very happy with it.

You might have difficulty insuring a 1996 car for the first time (as your main car) if you purchased one now, but you'll have no problem continuing to insure a car you've already had for any number of years.

You could also get classic car insurance on a car of that age easily if it was a second car.

I've only had two cars to date:

1998 Opel Corsa 1.0L petrol - A very basic car but it was fun to drive. Eventually too many repairs, rust, and NCT failures meant it was time to get rid of it.

2011 Ford Fiesta 1.4L diesel (current) - Solid as a rock and has never given me any issues. Given the current price of cars, I'm just going to drive this until the wheels fall off.

It's scary. I was looking at cars in 2020 and they are basically the same price(nearly dearer) now but three years older with more milage.

Stick with what you have at least you know what you have.

1995 Peugeot 106 - an unreliable piece of crap

1997 Skoda Fabia - much more reliable, but it had zero power and struggled on motorways

1999 VW Polo - good car at the time but the 1.6 I had drank petrol

2008 Mini Cooper D - very fun to drive but pretty impractical

2014 BMW 320D - had a lot of options which made for a luxurious interior and a fantastic car overall

2020 VW ID3 - First EV and I could never go back as the electric drivetrain is so vastly superior in every meaningful way for my needs

Planning to change to another EV soon mainly because I can't stand the controls and infotainment in the ID3

I'm on my 3rd Skoda Octavia, currently a 2019 estate.

My first one (nicknamed "The Tank") had 700k km on the clock before I passed it on to a family member who kept it for another 2 years before it was involved in a minor collision and then scrapped it.

The 2nd one was a 2014 and had 400k km on the clock. I got €5k for it in a trade in last month which I was pretty happy with as 2nd hand car prices have gone through the roof.

They're a very reliable car, parts and servicing are cheap and fairly straightforward.

I've had a few other runaround cars like a Golf and a Polo, older cars such as a Nissan Sunny and a BMW E30.

    • 90 Toyota Corolla Saloon, 1.3 (in that metallic light blue): It was top of it class when released, had fancy extras like electric windows (on the front). Great car. Exterior was a bit rough, but perfect for a first car. Had it for a couple of years.
    • 00 Mitsubishi Lancer, 1.3: Was a fan of the Evos but was never going to be able to afford one as my second ever car. So got the everyday affordable insurance bracket version. Great car for what it was, if a bit lacking in power. Very little mechanical trouble. Also had this just shy of 2 years.
    • 02 Mitsubishi Galant, 2.0: Fell in love with the VR4 Galant at one point, so got the affordable version of it. My second favourite car. Comfortable, powerful enough, I'll have one again but hopefully the VR4 version! Or the first every one, sexy 80s styling.

I then got a bit broke, and things started going wrong that I couldn't afford to fix immediately, and that led to a spate of temporary/cheap cars which included:

    • 02 Galant 2.0 diesel: My first turbo car, even if it was diesel. The "power" was nice. But, it wasn't well maintained before I got it and as such, didn't last too long unfortunately. My third favourite car, if only it had lasted longer.
    • 98 Civic coupe with bodykit and bwaap exhaust: Bought it off a mate who was leaving the country. Intent was to fix what was needed and sell it at a profit. Didn't work out that way, traded it for....
    • 00 Corolla Hatchback, 1.3: Twas alright. Not a fan of Toyota clutches/layout/materials, feels cheap all around, but not as cheap as Ford!

Tried going back to good cars then, but still constrained by budget:

    • 00 Mercedes E220 2.2 diesel: My first Merc. I'm 5'6". I was LOST inside this car, and I loved it! Powerful car with no worry about overtaking. Very comfortable. It's hard to explain just how different Merc is to other cars, it's the small things. Leather interior removes that cheap look. Everything was still solid and not rattling like most other second hand cars of that age. Unfortunately, the first right shock disappeared going around a roundabout one day and discovered it was a botched weld job and was now an economical writeoff...
    • 01 Nissan Almera 1.5: A stuck purchase, worst car I've ever owned. Maybe it's because it was just a ball of dirt anyway, but it was horrible to drive. Thankfully the engine just stopped one day so I was forced to change... oh no... but, that urgency led to a new acquaintance selling me his runaround that he didn't need anymore for €600:
    • 02 Volvo S40 1.8: An affordable Merc! It was nearly on par with the E220 for comfort. Pretty good mileage. Lovely solid interior that didn't look cheap. A fantastic car, but one I couldn't afford to insure after long due to the age. Would still be driving it if insurance wasn't just going up and up.
    • 06 Volvo S40 2.0 diesel: An upgrade, that somehow felt like a downgrade. While newer, it felt cheaper. Was a nice drive, but maybe because it wasn't long for this world as it died not too long after. Ended up getting my money back from the garage that sold it to me, so not all bad. But, this eventually led to getting a loan for my current:
    • 10 Mercedes E220 coupe 2.2d: God I love this car. Powerful, comfortable, stylish, not kid friendly. Love it. It doesn't have too many extras, but it has everything you'd need for a car of it's age. It's done be well now for over 4 years and I don't intend on changing, but insurance companies may change my mind on that. There really is nothing like a Mercedes. And mine has indicators!

That all has left me with a love for Mercedes and coupes. You'll never find me driving one of those wanchor wagons everyone is so intent on having these days.

    In sequence.

1989 Ford Fiesta (1.4l) Basic. Learned to drive on it and it got me through college. Can’t complain.

1995 Ford Thunderbird (4.2l V8) Bought cheap, in 2000 after moving to the US. Good long distance cruiser. OK car. Retired from service after an accident,

2001 Chevrolet Camaro (3.6l V6). Bought 2003 as I recall. Terrible car, but one of the most fun cars I’ve driven. The lack of grip allowed me to get sideways in all sorts of places without risk of breaking the speed limit. In fairness to it, it was cheap and reliable.

2005 Audi S4 (4.2l V8) Bought new, still in service as a reserve if the others go in the shop or loan to visitors. Manual transmission, cabrio, not many in the country. For its time, a fantastic vehicle and lots of fun. Unfortunately, came wi5 a design flaw where the engine tears itself apart at about 135000 miles if you don’t do an engine-out preventative repair after about 110,000, and I haven’t spare money to do it.

2006 Audi A6 (3.6l V6, I think) Family car. Boring, but extremely comfortable.

2013 Volkswagen Passat (Diesel). Excellent value for money, was a reliable family hauler to replace the A6. Great fuel economy. Traded it in after a couple years for nearly full value under the Dieselgate scandal.

2013 Mercedes SL550 (4.7l V8). Came with the wife. A very impressive vehicle for the time, looks surprisingly dated now inside. Fast. Good legroom. (I’m 1.98m, you.l be surprised how many cars I don’t fit in). A bit of a reliability Lemon for a while.

2015 BMW 550i (4.4l V8). Replaced the Passat as the family car. More comfortable than the SL, fewer features. Plenty enough vroom for the job. Some surprising maintenance glitches, and it just drinks oil even worse than the S4.

Those are just the personal vehicles. I travel a lot for work and rent all sorts of cars. I have considered doing a series of reviews every time I rent a car. I wonder if it's worth starting a communal "here's what I rented today" thread over on Motors, now I think about it. I enjoy driving for its own sake, hence the large engines and preference for manual transmissions. (As on the Camaro and S4)

Also not listed are various work vehicles, from Nissan Patrol FFR and HMMWV through M1 Abrams and M3 Bradley. Which are a heck of a lot of fun to drive, albeit lacking in practicality for some daily operations like the school run or shopping trips.

Big car loan...........not a big car.............2023 Toyota Corolla on hire purchase. The Jag was lovely to drive but it was like Will Smith's wife. It couldn't be trusted. Very unreliable for a car that's not particularly old.

    Previous cars were:

    2016 Jaguar XF

    2018 Ford Focus

    2014 Ford Focus

    2008 Audi A4

    2010 Ford Mondeo

    2010 Ford Focus Van

    2007 Renault Megane

    2004 Renault Megane

    2000 Fiat Punto

2000 Fiat Punto (written off so got a replacement).

    1992 Opel Corsa

    1990 Daihatsu Charade

Oh. I forgot the 2010 Jag XFR. However, I only drove it once, as the wife said the car goes or she goes. Fortunately, since I got it at a serious discount, I didn’t lose any money on it. The big problem was convincing buyers that I was genuinely selling a car with 50 miles on the clock. Probably could have gotten more for it if people didn’t think it was probably a scam.
