Where are all the British and American Nuclear submarines? Surely it would not be hard for one of them even to join the search to find them. I remember when the search was on for the missing Malaysian plane MH370 that some Nuclear submarines did help too.

I don't think nuclear subs are intended for deep-water searches and, anyway, any SAR assets not already close to hand would be of little value when the submersible has (in the best case) maybe a day and a half of oxygen left.

AT 2000m depth the water pressure is 2,800 lbs per square inch. (Pressure increases more or less constantly with depth). You need very exceptional vessels to operate tat those depths.

Probably hundreds or thousands of nautical miles away, or even if they were in the vicinity could not jeopardize opsec even for this case (depends on the priority of their mission, like mirroring a Russian nuclear sub and preventing it from slipping away)

So an American nuclear submarine is going to cancel its current mission, come out of hiding, zip on over to the North Atlantic before the submersibles oxygen runs out and when it gets there it is going to do what exactly? Launch nuclear missiles at the Titanic? Give them a tow? Open the docking bay and beam them all aboard?

Maybe the yanks have one in Washington all fueled up and nowhere to go. Its what, 1500 miles Washington to the Titanic? At 35mph thats over 40 hours for them to arrive at a search site which unfortunately is the size of Connecticut.

Any time you are in a submarine oxygen is running out. The 96 hours is the total supply, but they got into trouble less tha 2 hours after launch. They could have release a drop weight to return to the surface.

I thought there must be a window alright. If they wanted to view the Titanic on a screen, it could be done remotely.

Listening to the expert on PK, I feel there is no hope of finding them alive. He reckons there was a hull rupture on descent and the end was instantaneous. He also said the metal knocking sounds could be coming from many metal objects in the seabed including the Titanic debris field.

Even if it is intact on the sea floor, raising it would be like trying to bring up an 8 ton white van.

Specifically it takes 2+ hours to get to depth but lost contact an hour into the trip so the theory its stuck in the Titanic wreckage doesn't sound likely. Also the specs of the sub detail many redundant systems which should refloat it even in the event of a power loss. He reckons the most likely theory is it was leaking and suffered a catastrophic loss of pressure but there's still those reports that banging was heard on monday and maybe tuesday by the searchers.

There is one thing for sure that whatever happens here, Oceangate is finished as a titanic expedition operator. They will never be able to operate again after this.

This brings back memories of the Kurst in 2000 and how the people on board lost their lives. A horrible way to die one would imagine.

I've been seeing this dreadful narrative from quite a few quarters on social media, of those on board effectively being attacked for receiving help because a billionaire happens to be on board. Imagine that, attacking people on board a vessel with limited oxygen at the bottom of the Atlantic, just because one of those on board has quite a lot of money in his bank account.

Yeah it was the lead international news on TF1 too.

There are probably only a relatively small number of robotic research vessels that can get to those depths. A full scale submarine isn’t likely to be off much use. They can neither dive that deep nor could they do very much to assist. Their sonar systems might be somewhat useful but so would research vessels used in the oil industry to scan sea floors.

Unfortunately the outcome of this is not likely to be good.

Hardly an attack, it's a question of resources. For example if I hike a mountain and need a helicopter rescue, you can be sure that I will be charged several thousand dollars, I expect the same to apply here.

These guys knowingly decided to jeopardize their lives in a risky venture, they should not be able to take that risk on the taxpayers behalf also, let alone the risk to those who may try to save them.

It's the top story because it is intriguing not because of importance in the grand scheme of things.
