Substitution query

If you have applied for a substitution, and it is granted, are you issued a new licence directly, with the same expiry date as your old one?

Or do you have to go and pay for a new licence, but have the clock start over?

Same license as is now, same end date, just new firearm details on it. No extra cost.

What’s the story on subs? Is it calibre for calibre only? Or any rifle for any rifle

The law says like for like.

Some districts take this as air rifle for air rifle or shotgun for shotgun only. In other words the exact same type and design only.

Some districts are more lenient in that allow a change of rifle of different calibers so long as they're the same category. So an example would be a 22lr for say a .17hmr or .22wmr. So not the same caliber but all rimfire. Same with shotguns so long as they're O/U, double barrel, etc.

Then some don't mind at all. Will change a 223 for a 308 or as one chap I know done a 22lr for a shotgun because they were both unrestricted.

Basically it's up to the district.

Substitute licence arrived. Ammo limit as requested.

I see it refers now to a maximum magazine / capacity limit, and there was guidance and how to store and use the shotgun on the grant letter, which I've not seen before.
