Looks like the record IMT in the West will taper back a bit in the last week with a lot of rain forecast. A lot cooler but more like normal June temperatures. .

We had 32mm in Sligo but wer not an official Met Station. Neither is Tralee 71mm.

After three weeks ...

IMT on 16.5, the third week average 17.5 was 3.5 above normal. (that makes two weeks at 17.5, 3.8 above normal for that period). It seems probable that we will finish around this value of 16.5 (which is our highest IMT forecast from JCX BXC, but among regular contest entrants it was only 15.5 -- possible hammer rule reduced minimum progression situation there).

MAX 28.8, MIN 2.1. If I had to bet I would say these are both set.

PRC 70% of normal, the second week was much wetter at 170% of normal. To reach a normal June outcome we would need to average 170% of normal to end of month (including today which will be mostly dry so closer to 195% for the last eight days). The current model runs give at least that much rain so as unlikely as it appeared to many of us three weeks ago, the outcome could even be slightly above normal. Our forecast consensus was only 70% and Pauldry at 100% (tied with Normal) holds a possible hammer (also Joe Public at 99%) if result is 93 to 107 per cent (raw score must be 13/15 or higher for PRC to hold a hammer). In any case the hammer's effect will be small as regular minimum progression would be similar to raw scores, and if we go high enough for that not to be the case, the hammer is removed. So either way, unless the week proves drier than expected, a small boost can be expected in PRC scores. If the outcome is below 95% probably raw scores will be fine. There are quite a few forecasts around 90% and in the 80s.

SUN now 155% of normal with the third week quite sunny despite the rainfalls, at 128.5%. Given that today will record another 10-12 hours of sun, so we are likely at 158% now, the lowest SUN could possibly finish is around 110% but with even half normal sunshine (including today) the outcome would be 124% and with normal sunshine it would be 138%. Looks to me like 130 to 135 will be the final range of outcomes. Waterways has 131% and two forecasts were above that range, several others just below (in the 120s). There were enough above normal SUN forecasts that it seems unlikely we will need minimum progression here.

Maximum 24h rain (for contest eligible locations) 30.9 mm. This has a slight chance of being overtaken in wet spells on Sunday and near middle of next week perhaps, but guidance does not suggest significantly higher daily amounts likely.

Looking at forecasts it's hard to pick one that would score much higher than others especially not knowing the details yet for boosted scoring. Will hold off on posting any preliminary scoring until end of month approaches.

IMT is a ridiculous 16.7 C as of 25th, could stay on that value until mid-week and perhaps lose one tenth. In any case however it finishes there will be a boost to scoring, I've decided since the IMT hammer is held by an occasional entrant, the hammer rule will be modified back to the usual full minimum progression to let June scores finish in a normal range for allowing a random selection of low scoring months to be dropped. I will balance that in relative terms by reducing the late penalty for the entrant with the hammer. (JCX BXC or some variation on that as I am on wrong page here to look it up). Will hold off on preliminary scores for now, may post them around 29th as we'll be waiting to at least 4th of July for confirmation by MS (and 5th if this is a holiday weekend there, is it?) .

Thanks, I also worked out that counting amounts in the contest grid on Monday, our PRC is at a guaranteed minimum of 75% of the final average (or about 90% of normal for 26 days now) so any further rain will add to that 75%, could finish around 85-90% or so. Since we have to wait four days I will actually calculate it from the end of month data for eleven locations.

After four weeks,

IMT on 16.6 with fourth week at 16.9 (2.5 above normal). Will probably finish 16.6 as it is currently rounded down from 16.64. In any case scoring already decided at any outcome 16.4 to 16.7.

MAX 28.8 MIN 2.1

PRC 89% (now at a guaranteed 83% of full month) after a rather wet week at 145% of normal.

SUN now 139% after a fourth week at 90% of normal. Likely to finish around 135%. Will adjust scoring if necessary (in previous post).

Max 24h rain 30.9 mm, gearing up for possible challenge in southwest on 30th?

It's official. June 2023 was the warmest on record with an IMT of over 16c for the first time beating 1940.

Only Phoenix Park and Dublin Airport did not have their warmest June but here it was the warmest June since 1976.

I wonder if there is any Irish data for 1846, 1826 or 1822, three ancient years that all topped 2023 in the UK CET series? I have not seen the final value for 2023 but it was set to edge out 1976 there and move into fifth place, 1676 was also warmer in that data set.

The CET values were 18.2 (1846), 18.0 (1676), 17.3 (1826), 17.1 (1822), 16.9 or 17.0 (2023, to be confirmed later today), 16.9 (1762, 1976, 1798), and 16.8 (1858), 16.6 (1775) now rounding out the top ten. In the CET, 1940 is tied with 1970 and three other years at 16.4.

Odd stat that I discovered, in the CET, 20 of the warmest 23 Junes are even numbered years (only 2023, 1775 and 1781 were odd numbered and the most recent odd numbered warm June was 2017 tied 25th), and 17 of the top 22 coldest Junes were odd numbered years (1916 and 1972 in top four broke that trend with 1698, 1814 and 1860 the only other even numbered coldest Junes, more recently than 1972 you have to go back to t68 1990 and 2012 in the list).

I won't see official end of month data for Ireland until after noon today and will let you know our contest official numbers then.

From monthly data, IMT finished on 16.5 and PRC 91%, SUN is 133%.

Nothing to revise yet on scoring, next move will come on 4th when I can confirm all data.

May post the annual update before then, can always adjust that later.

At the moment, Dacogawa, Kindred Spirit and sryanbruen have the top scores for June (as posted a few days back).

IMT _ two tied for second place, no third place awarded.

MAX _ Con Sensus would be second.

MIN _ Three ranks without ties.

PRC _ two tied for third place, also NormaL would be third.

SUN _ two tied for third place.

BONUS _ Three ranks without ties among forecasters, but NormaL would be tied for second.

Order is same as determined by total scores in annual scoring summary above this table.

Not all have any late penalties, but those who do will have their contest score (after penalties) in the TOTAL column and the total before penalties (the sum of the category scores) in brackets and italic font, after their contest score.

Scoring is now confirmed, congrats to Kindred Spirit on both the annual and monthly scoring and Dacogawa and sryanbruen on their June totals.

I won't bother to edit tables (which at this point would mean re-posting) for this but will change two scores in the next annual update, as SUN actually worked out to 132.5% so the two values above 130 will score one more point for SUN in terms of monthly, annual and category scoring. That applies to cornerstonelad and JCX BXC. Any differentials for forecasts below 130 will be treated as minimum progression. Same applies to PRC which was 91% rather than 90% except there, nobody was short of potential points. But for the climate records the values are PRC 91 and SUN 133.

I'll probably remember this next month because I tend to look at the last post and work back to tables when I copy the annual scoring summary.
