What's an average time and distance for rowing machine?

So we all know a 5k run is circa 25-30mins for someone somewhat healthy....

But what is the rowing equivalent?

Got a running injury, so need to pick up rowing.

Female here. My 5k run be somewhere around the 30 min mark. When I did a 5K row a couple yrs ago it was 22 minutes. If you are a guy then it would be 30% faster approx... I think

Thanks guys for the info ! I did 10 mins and 2 k today when I wasn't really feeling into it, so line in the sand and upwards from here.

If you're new on the rowing machine I'd watch a few YouTube videos to nail the technique. Important for time and not to strain something!

Can rowing replace running? Different muscle groups are trained.

My rowing time is about 20 mins 30 sec.

Finding it difficult to break the 20 min glass ceiling which is considered good for 5k.

A word of warning; when I first started rowing I really pushed myself and ended up fracturing a rib. Really painful and a common enough injury associated with rowing.

I'm tall so 5k on the rower was 19:45 ish, would have been hurting but could go further. I usesd to try and keep teh 500m splits just under the 2 mins.

I found the 2k much harder and could never break into the 6 mins area. Best I think was 7:06 and I was dead after that. A max effort 2km on the rower is a very tough test both mentally and physically. As mentioned technique is very important on the rower and also the way you have the drag set for your style of rowing. I think I used to set it around 110-120 which night be around a 7 on the C2 depending on how well the machine was maintained. You can edge it slightly one way or teh other, light and more strokes or hevaier and slightly less strokes but don't go too far to either end.

I haven't been on the concept2 site in while but they had a lot of resources, training vids and maybe programs so have a look.

I'm not much of a rowing expert, I'll be honest with you. I think rowing uses the back and arms. And in running it's the legs. What do you think?

I imagine that the biggest force producer in running is the legs. That’s the power that moves the seat. Follow by the back, pulling in the handle. Arms helping a little.

Runing is obviously legs. But has upper body too that swings your arms an balances your hips.

The thing about rowing is not necessarily going flat out trying to get there as fast as possible ( well in training anyway ).

Slow, strong and steady pace. Builds up stamina. Try between 18-20 strokes /minute over your chosen distance.

Rowing is mostly legs. It's a common misconception that it's upper body predominantly.

What you're trying to achieve is a faster split time ( normally measured in mins/500mtr ) using the least strokes.

If you see yourself over time getting your split times down using the same normal stroke rate the you're getting stronger.

an expansion on the question.... would people usually do a 5 km row, like you would with a 5km run?

Or is the sort of go to arbitrary distance/ time still 30 mins or so of whatever....

Seen a few mention on other sites they do 200m sprint after warmup every so often...

I'm tying to gauge what the go to exercises and distances are for your regular Jo

500m, 2km and 5km are common competitive distances

I sometimes see it said on rowing sites that a sub 2 minute 500m is a good goal.

But i dont know if they mean just for a 500m, or a 500m split time over 2k for example.

I can push a sub 2 min 5k ok, but not a hope in hell of doing it consecutively

It would be a typical split target 5km. For a single 500m, it would be a much shorter. maybe 1:40-1:45

Usually use a combo of longer rows and shorter intervals to ultimately improve my 2k time.

If nothing else, it stops it getting boring if you're mixing up the distances rather than doing 1k/2k/5k every single time.

There is an element of planning it out rather than randomly choosing what to do when I go in

Been doing 1.2km in 5 mins as warm up for the gym...

Then been doing 30 mins once or twice a week, up to the 7km mark without being too gassed.... could push it a bit further, but don't want to write myself off for other training.
