I think she has a great opportunity tbh. BBC is well respected in the USA and are now expanding and taking on the likes of fox and cnn (which are not impartial).

I hope (for the sake of america) that there are a lot of people who are sick of that punch and Judy show and looking for some actual news, and caitriona is getting in on the ground floor. More power to her.

Am getting the feeling RTE is turning into a bit of a sh"tshow at the moment. Presenters queuing up to say they don't want the late late gig. Staff moving on and constant discussion around salaries. Think Catriona used her maternity time to review her options. Probably felt it mightn't be the worst time to get out of the country for a few years, with all the crap that's ahead of us. And she'd be right.

The hype around this woman is baffling. She is incredibly wooden and stiff in front of camera and completely breaks down when not reading from a script. I would actually say she is among the worst RTE presenters i have seen in my life.

She got where she is through sheer naked ambition and a good dollop of playing the gender card. And i suppose the fake blond thing makes her good magazine article material.

She has stood out to me as being excellent since her court reporting days for Today FM. I don't usually notice broadcast journalists much, but I've really noticed her (and David McCullagh).

She got where she is through extremely hard work, and yeah ambition (what's wrong with that?) Any evidence of her playing the gender/sex card? Any evidence of her deciding to colour her hair for nefarious reasons?

She was over there before doing the gig for RTE for a few years.

BBC has a bigger cheque book and while like the rest of them she was on a cushy number over in D4 she probably knew there wasn't much hope of any further career progression in that dump.

So Perry takes the 6-1 gig five years ago.

Pushes out two sprogs during her tenure, which means she worked maybe 2 - 2.5 years of that, for which she had her family on the Irish taxpayer / licence payer dime and now is away off for the King's shilling, albeit based in America, with the family had and the RTÉ money bagged.

She can go way now for herself and not let the door hit her in the arse.

Always preferred her as a reporter rather than a newsreader.

Her book, In America: Tales from Trump Country was a good read.

The Tribe was a decent read too but I think that's a subject matter that requires many more pages than she gave it. Good introductory piece though.

I enjoyed her as US correspondent and she was a decent presenter for Six One. I hope she'll do well on BBC. I don't get the bitter and pretty sexist attitudes of so many on here who have probably achieved very little.

I'll always remember when she got the 6-1 gig she was asked how she felt about 2 female presenters. She said something about how it's great for women and how capable they both were etc. Well wasn't that convenient for your career at that time catriona. I think you'd have a different response to two men getting it.

I've seen many people on here being called sexist for talking about women's looks in the past, especially if you're being critical. Even the fact that this thread is half full of similar claims because people dared to not worship her, says a lot about the hyper sensitivity of these types. It's a very weird point of view, but it's not me who's created the standard.
