This guy intervened in argument between the skanger and his skanger gf and the two of them (the girl too) turned on him, followed him off the bus and stabbed him in the face and leg.

People want change in Ireland, they want men to stand up to men who are a danger to women. This completely disincentives' that idea.

That poor man had to go around now for the rest of his life with a stab scar on his face. And considering your appearance is the first thing you're judged on in this world, it's a complete slap in the face.

It wasn't hard to guess who the judge was, he's so well known for his wacky sentencing. I remember seeing a petition years ago that tried to get him fired, but the petition was pulled. There was another petition a few weeks ago, that's probably been pulled as well.

Perhaps there should be more incidents of appeals against the leniency of sentences? If the courts get clogged up with those appeals, it might send a message to the judiciary to get their act together?

A friend of mine was a Garda (retired) and he advised me a few years ago that the one thing he dreaded was being called to a domestic incident. on xmas day many years ago, called to a house in waterford where husband was beating wife up. After much ado, they finally got hubby out of house and were pushing/shoving him in the direction of the Paddy wagon. From nowhere the much beaten wife emerged from the house and unleashed a kick on the Garda. Eventually after all was in order and punter on his way to the Station, Garda approached wife enquiring about she decided to give him a kicking. He was told that if she did not do it, husband would give her another hiding on his return from the station

I think that's what all police officers fear the worst. You have a violent incident between two people and the police is always seen as an unwelcoming 3rd party interference in such a situation. And an outside interference is certainly not wanted by two arguing parties.

It's different if cops are chasing robbers. There are only two parties involved, the good ones and the bad ones.

The records don't give any more profound meaning than just personal disputes. In a group that prided itself on brutality, fighting each other was always going to be a problem, it was considered acceptable, they met their purpose.

Prison overcrowding is indeed a government failing.

Every few years, I get to hold the government accountable for that.

He deserves to be locked up but I can guess why this decision was made.

The judge probably, together with reasons of overcrowded prisons, assessed that the assailant was likely already in a state of high emotion, be it panic / aggrevation / defense, when he was approached.

To see someone suddenly come at you while in that state, in the middle of an argument will lead to a different reaction than if he was in a calm state. He's not going to automatically assume the approaching person just wants to stop the argument.

Did you read the story? The assailant followed the victim off the bus to stab him. This wasn't a knee-jerk reaction swinging a knife at someone coming towards him. He could have easily stayed on the bus and the whole issue would have gone away.
