Ya thats just commuters - what is the overall modal though?

Bus usage alone for commuters in 2025 will be higher than in 2016. Been a significant shift in Galway City since then

Everyone I know that utilizes a bicycle also agrees that its a poor design. I do wish the designers in some of these cases would actually go cycle/walk/drive along these proposals to get a get hands on experience before landing on a final design

The whole point is that car transport has been prioritised over all other methods for decades now so of course cars are the main method of transport. It's downright dangerous cycling around this city due to poor driving standards and infrastructure. Things need to be balanced back in favor of walking, PT and cycling and people will use them and the city will stopped being choked to death with traffic.

All the people who won't walk to the end of your driveway will still be able to drive. But they shouldn't be priortised over the other more efficient methods of transport.

don't forget poor cycling standards too. not just driver and infra.

Also needs to be a crackdown on those delivery supposed "cyclist" but doubt they are legal on public.

Agreed. I'd love to see the guards dedicate 6 months to actual road rule enforcement. They'd make a fortune

And of course by doing that - prioritising over all other modes the Galway City & County have failed the people who use the cars every day now.

Need to tackle Public Transport from arteries into the City in a big way.

More people walking, cycling and using PT - a lot less cars in front of ya when ya stop at that traffic light.

That's the mad thing about the Netherlands- it's a great place to drive, I was able to drive into Eindhoven in rush our and park in City Centre no bother because they have their active travel and public transport so well set up.

Making everything about cars makes things worse and worse for drivers.

The traffic in Galway is getting to crisis levels and nothing is being done about it. People are getting up earlier and earlier to escape it or spending hours in traffic jams. For future economic reasons, we need action and we need it yesterday.

I know - seen the same when driving in small German Cities decades ago now that had good PT and Bike infrastructure.

It still surprises me that in 2025 how this blows people's minds in Ireland. Does not compute for so many still.

They can't get the ones dedicated to road policing to do their jobs so good luck with that

Not sure why you're wishing me luck with it. I'm just posting what I'd like to see.

In case you are unaware it's just a turn of phrase in this instance, if you are aware and posted anyway be aware that pedantry is pretty much trolling but no warning for now just a general info point for posters.

We're not getting those rent-an-ebike stands until summer 2026, according to NTA

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,388 ✭✭✭what_traffic

Could be worth waiting for if the rollout is wider than the current scheme

Will Galway be without bicycles for a period so?.

I believe so ya. Think the current contract runs out at the end of this year and then there'll be a gap before something else comes in.

Citylink: September 12th, 2025 | Due to heavy traffic today, all services departing Galway will potentially be delayed. https://www.citylink.ie/timetables/760/?updates=true#collapseUpdates

What is the heavy traffic today, in particular? Just a Friday?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,388 ✭✭✭what_traffic

    No its the heavy showers!

    Car College traffic I reckon?

Call for designated bus lane on N59 between Moycullen and city

    https://www.galwaybayfm.ie/galway-bay-fm-news-desk/call-for-designated-bus-lane-on-n59-between-moycullen-and-city-202783

Personally would start with a CALL for a LARGE Secondary School for Moycullen if I was the Cllr.

How does Moycullen not have a Secondary school? Its mad!

It not on my radar at all (yet), but it seems we need way more Secondaries, and a proper system to allocate places. None of this children of past pupils and feeder school nonsense. Build local schools and then offer places to local kids there. Ive been hearing about kids living in Knocknacarra having to go to school in Athenry because there was no place for them in a local school, I know people in Furbo and Spiddal who drive into the city for primary and secondary spending hours on the road every day. I presume its the same in Moycullen etc

If the area could elect councillors who were less concerned with cans of Ronson and more concerned with the contents of the Local Area Plan for Moycullen, it may be a different story.

The last LAP for Moycullen was let expire in February 2023 and made no reference to the provision of a secondary school as an objective. The Small Town Growth Plan for Moycullen is scarcely better in that it only makes a wooly reference "…in particular in the case of Maigh Cuilinn encourag[ing] the provision of additional community services such as a new school, local library or other civicuse to the benefit of the local community."

This isn't hard work. It doesn't involve seeking funding from the Department or acquiring land, it literally involves two sentences in a plan which would get the ball rolling for the provision of a secondary school.

More consideration is given in the various planning strategies for County Galway to making sure that Ronald McDonald doesn't set up shop next door to a school than for Moycullen to get a decades overdue secondary school. You are all free to use that line when roasting your Councillors on the doorsteps next time…

    Good article from Dara Bradley

He's not wrong, it always feels like they forgot that they were closing the roads and just lashed on with it anyway every year. There is so much scope for pedestrianised areas around the city, it would be useful to survey impacts on various business types, tourism etc. Businesses claim they werent consulted, and were fearful of loss of trade due to loss of parking etc, and yet we often hear cited that businesses do better in pedestrianised areas due to higher and prolonged footfall. Perhaps it depends on business type. But this should be assessed honestly by the Council working with traders and residents, emergency services etc

From my point of view, I love the outdoor seating and would love to see it extended, but I'm not even sure whether hospitality businesses would even be keen to keep it going into the wet winter months….

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,388 ✭✭✭what_traffic

I agree with lots of what ya say alright, certain streets don't need to be fully pedestrianised, just the pedestrian/public realm itself itself need to be improved for say 6 months of year when Outdoor seating is viable. The likes of Raven Terrace and the Small Crane could be much better than currently setup
