You use them all the time sometimes without even realising it. Yes you could live without them so its not food or water but life would be a lot harder without them. They are one and many.

By your own logic we could live without whatever you think is the answer. If it was invented by humans and has just been used more in the last 50 years it is not essential to our survival as a species.
