Beer ad from the early 90s - help a girl out

Because my family all think I made this up and I'm genuinely starting to wonder if it was all a fever dream. But I *distinctly* remember an ad for beer that used to be on Irish TV in the 90s It had the song "Oh Sit Down" by James in it and featured a woman in a short skirt with the tops of her stockings showing walking into a bar and getting absolutely letched on by the men sitting at the counter.

Neither Google nor repeated interrogations of my family and friends have turned up any evidence of its existence. Did I actually dream it?

    Bueller??

    Anyone???

Rings a bell but can't remember what exactly it was for.

Sit Down came out in 1990 so you'd need to look at 90s ads.

Only Irish advert I remember from the eighties is that Christmas ESB advert with the young lad letching at the pub

@L1011 90s then. It's not like I was setting 1980-1989 as a parameter in my searches anyway.

    Smithwicks was it?

You're definitely right about their being an ad with that song though.

Yeah, I thought Smithwicks but, again, Google is denying all knowledge!

Yeah I remember it. I'd say it was more mid-late 90s. Possibly Heinaken or something equally generic

this is hardly it wrong song though

Was it an ad for Bass? I remember it too....

I'm pretty certain Heineken did an ad with that song.

    Did you? Be honest

Pretty sure it was Heineken, I remember the lady in the little black dress and he lads having a look as she walked by.

    You didn't imagine it

Ask James's label Rough Trade Records.

Just chalk it up to the “Mandela Effect”, or a glitch in the matrix and move on

I remember it well. Think it might have been a mainly instrumental version of Sit Down used except for the end when the chorus kicks in. Im pretty sure there was some kind of gimmicky camera angles used, or maybe split screen. Cant recall what drink it was for.

They also did a follow up ad during the World Cup when some girl walked past the TV while a match was on. It was a crowd chanting it.

    pretty sure it was Heineken.

Glad I'm not going crazy. There's absolutely zero evidence of it ever having existed to be found online, though. Or at least with any of the search terms I'm using. Maybe it got cancelled. It was horrendously sexist, in fairness. That's actually why I remember it, I absolutely hated it, even at the time, and I was only about 8.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,080 ✭✭✭✭Maximus Alexander

I 100% remember there being an ad with that song. Couldn't tell you what it was for though.

Thanks for posting that video eggy81.

That was one of the most under-rated ads for a beer brand ever! Subtle, slightly mysterious but also down-to-earth with a perfect sound track. A really timeless ad. It also throws in a very subtle dig at Guinness hinting that it's just a womens drink. 😁😁😁 . Compare that ad to an ad for Rockshore....

Cancelled was hardly a thing back then, why was it so sexist?

I tried searching yesterday. And ended up with that song stuck in my head. I'm going to try again over the weekend. Now I just need to know what it was in.

There was one time pre internet where me and a group of friends remembered an advert with the line "Tuesday, nothing ever happens on a Tuesday" and we had to wait for it to go online before we could figure out what it was.

    What was it?????

This thread is bad enough already!

I don't remember that ad - and it sounds like the sort of thing that I'd have noticed as a horny teenager in the 90s. I do have a vague memory that the song was used in an ad or likely multiple different ads.

There are hours of UK and Irish tv ads from the 90s on YouTube so if you put in the time you'll surely stumble across it. I'm looking for one for Volvic mineral water circa 1992 with women playing tennis and at the end of the ad for a split second one of their skirts blows up and shows her knickerless arse. No info on it online, nothing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,236 ✭✭✭✭Dial Hard

Another one that sounds like it may since have been cancelled. It's not exactly the done thing anymore to present women as literal sex objects to shift a few pints or bottles of water or whatever.

Quality street. Two old women sitting on a bench. One says that and a marching band walk past immediately after.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,472 ✭✭✭✭Grayson

So, I did a quick search for volvic adverts and couldn't find anything. Then I thought, maybe another brand. Seems like it might be evian based on the type of advert they ran.

Nope. It's literally a woman in stockings and a ridiculously short, swishy skirt walking into a bar while the guys sitting there turn around in canon to literally perve on her. Like, all it was missing was Warner Bros cartoon style eyes out on stalks and tongues unravelling onto the floor.

You should contact a guy on twitter called Killian M2 video archive - he has a stupid amount of old tapes he is digitising and it might ring a bell

I remember the ad, I can see yer wan walk thru the bar and gettin ogled by the guys, and as the song ends ,the sit down next to meeeeeee , bit she sits down beside the guy she's supposed to meet and I think she takes a sup out of his pint, but I'm fcuked if I can remember if it was smithwicks harp or bloody Hoffman's the ad was sellin

Sounds more like a Benny Hill sketch?

Complete with "Action Replay" at 2.33 just incase you missed anything.

From 1981, to me 1990's would have been getting a bit late for that sort of thing in an advert.

Wake me up when it's all over.

Definitely existed and a great feel-good ad IIRC. Memories of the glory in qualification for USA 94

I'm nearly sure the ad with that James song was featured on Reeling in the years if you've the time to go through 10 1990's episodes

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 14,321 CMod ✭✭✭✭The Master

It's used in the 1991 episode, playing over footage of the coup in Russia . No sight of a beer advert though

As it hasn't turned up so far, meanwhile here's an early 90s classic ad for Bass. Think it must have inspired that much later Guinness one with Michael Fassbender.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,549 ✭✭✭✭Hotblack Desiato

I wonder what % of pubs in Ireland you could actually buy a Bass in at the time.

Was that filmed in the Crown in Belfast?

There was a big relaunch of Bass around 1990 if I recall, for a while you could get it in lots of places.

i tried to get chatgpt to recreate the ad for you, but no go. Even the AI thought that it was too sexist.

Just because you can’t find it doesn’t mean you’re NOT going crazy 😜

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,092 ✭✭✭Hyperbollix

I remember that song in an ad back in the day and Heineken was the first thing that jumped into my head.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,080 ✭✭✭✭Maximus Alexander

I also associated it with the World Cup in my head, has to be '94 because I was too young in '90 and the song was pretty ancient by '98.

  • Moderators, Arts Moderators Posts: 10,520 Mod ✭✭✭✭5uspect

I remember it too. Pretty sure it was Heineken. I also have a recollection of a follow up ad with the same song where the entirety of the add is a series of lovely bottoms sitting next to each other.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,549 ✭✭✭✭Hotblack Desiato

    They all have lovely bottoms.

I'm currently looking up ad breaks from RTE in 1990 and 1989. I ahven't found it yet.

Came across this. It's a very sensationalist advert for Crimeline.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,472 ✭✭✭✭Grayson

Also, thanks to this thread, I've now watched a ridiculous number of adverts for liver fluke prevention.
