Hey lads, looking at a Ruger P .308, Midlands gun club, migrated from Hilltop.

question for those who can help, is a semi auto .308 available in Ireland? are they as accurate as a bolt action?

    Any help greatly appreciated.

Semi auto centerfire rifles are currently available but are on the chopping block by next year. In other words any rifle licensed after 2015 will be banned so they are effectively banned now.

In short, not worth trying to license.

As for accuracy. A semi auto is not as good as a bolt action. I had a semi auto in 223 and have a Howa bolt action in 223. The Howa is a cheap rifle so it's not like I'm comparing a top of the range rifle against the semi auto.

The semi auto, on a good day, would hold 3/4" at 100 yards. The Howa will shamrock them. Basically stack the rounds on top of each other so it appears to be only one hole.

I also tried them at 300. The semi auto struggled to maintain 3 to 4 inch groups with fliers causing 6" inch groups. The Howa on other hand held 1" to max of 1.5" groups.

The other issue with semi autos is they can be very ammo fussy. It'll fire pretty much anything you feed it but will go from 4" at 100 yard to little over and inch just by changing ammo but was far more prone to fliers than the bolt action and the fliers were way off.

It sounds like the semi autos are useless but far from it. With the right ammo and set up they can be a great rifle and have benefits the bolt action don't.
