Magazine capacity required for licence applications / renewals

I have an application in for a SA 22lr rifle since May and I finally got to chat to the FO today (second time since applying) and was advised that there has been an update on the licencing system (quite recently) that now requires for the magazine capacity to be confirmed with the applicant - this is mandatory on their side. Seemingly this will now also be noted on the licence. This was listed as one reason for some of the delay with my application. The FO commented that this will also apply to renewals but that the forms have not yet been updated to collect this information from the applicants. For anyone out there about to submit paperwork, it may be worth including a note on this with your "supporting documentation" until the forms catch up. If you're waiting for a licence, it may be worth a follow up with your FO.

There is a magazine cap of 10 rounds for semi autos. Anything over 10 requires a restricted license.

With SI429/2019 and the introduction of a high capacity magazine ban on CF semi auto rifles it now limits them to 10 rounds only but there was no mention of any changes to rimfire rifles.

Meaning the restricted/unrestricted nature of the rifle still rests with the magazine capacity which has been in place since 2009 so I'm not sure what recent changes your FO is referring to.

Now if they mean , as you outline, that there will be upcoming changes to the FCA1 and FCR to specifically ask for such info (mag capacity) then that is another matter not related to any changes in legislation ( as such) and seems redundant given one is for an unrestricted licenses and the other for restricted licenses, and section 2 of the Firearms Act puts the onus on the applicant to know which to apply for.

He said system changes, not legislation changes. Some more like a software/database update with a mag capacity is recorded on the system and it can’t be left blank.

If that’s the case, might be best to record the limit of what is available rather than what’s you are purchasing first.

I've a sub in at the moment and rang about it at the four week mark. FO asked me about mag capacity. It's a unrestricted bolt action .22LR but they seemed to need the info on the magazine.

First they came for the socialists...

I know hence the reason I said:

My Reply was to cover all bases both systemic and legislative.

As I understood it, the system (I'm guessing PULSE) has been updated and the magazine capacity has to be confirmed and entered by the FO. The magazine capacity is also to be noted on the licence. Even though this is now required, the application and renewal forms have not been updated to request this from the applicant.

I just mentioned it so that anyone applying now can include it and maybe save a little time.
