If a defender is behind the goal line they still count for offside

Crazy game, some time for your first international goal!

Not seen any of the other game - how's the crowd at it, did they manage to muster a few more seats this time? And did people stay, or flood out after an hour again?

Which of these lads would England prefer to face? Possibly Senegal, they seem to be more prepared to take a few risks. Doubt they'd be too spooked by either tbh...

Something tells me Ecuador will score in the 94th min to send them through and Senegal out 😬

Goalscorer will be Valencia after a poor game.

Ecuador, a one man team and miles away from their first game performance. England will be desperate to play Senegal and should trounce Wales now.

Senegal hold out. Pleased for them. You'd imagine they will play England in the next round unless Wales can get an unlikely result later.

Very disappointed for Ecuador, but it was always going to be a dogfight today. Senegal just about shaded it

Doyle weirdly missing the point of zonal marking there, as if he thinks defenders are just supposed to stand there and jump straight up - the point is that players are tasked to win their zone - they get the same run on it as the attackers do. Then (if done right) you have an extra 3 or 4 guys whose job is to just block the attackers run. And there's still accountability - if someone scores in your zone and beats you to it, that's your fault.

That Caicedo goal was just bad defending, not down to using zonal marking specifically, but just bad defending. Regardless what system you're using, if you do it badly you're going to concede.

Foden gets a start, I see. Surely England will be too strong for Wales. Not sure the Welsh old guard have one last big game in them. I'll go for 2-0 England. Kane to open his account.

Iran vs USA looks more interesting. I had the US finishing second before the tournament, so I'll stick with that and say 2-1 to the Americans.

Really surprised they're not starting Reyna or Aaronson. They need to win, but it feels like they're leaving goals on the bench.

Can Wales do it on Giggsy's birthday.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,735 ✭✭✭✭~Rebel~

Pulisic, all the pace in the world, creates an overload - and then ignores the player beside him and runs straight into the defender.

Everyday was Giggs birthday! The amount of fun he had.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

Hope George pushes that loud commentator over the edge of the stand.

This comment is probably better in the other thread.

Poor auld Danny Ward, described as Leicester City reserve goalkeeper, after starting every Leicester game this season 😅

Good start for both the US and Iran here, already setting up a cracking game.

On a side note I always enjoy the crowd shots of Iran fans, the women are simply beautiful!

There is a real air of tension in it. I think England will go through the motions in the other one.

Henderson shouldn't be starting for England.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,735 ✭✭✭✭~Rebel~

Definitely not in their best 11 - but I'd say after how lazy and lethargic and weak they were in the last game he's been brought in to just keep the intensity up. If there's one thing Hendo can still do, it's keeping on top of his own players to keep them switched on.

    Wales are awful.

    That hurt

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,643 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

Pulisic puts the US in front. Nice move. Pulisic takes a whack in the process.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,198 ✭✭✭theoneeyedman

    Pulesic puts USA one up.

They finally get some use out of a Dest run down the right.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,033 ✭✭✭✭Mushy

Deserved lead for USA, nice simple header by Dest finished off by Pulisic.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,392 ✭✭✭✭martingriff

That hurt he is not coming back on he looks as he is in trouble

    Edit. Maybe not
