What do you get out of writing in this silly manner? It's a weird way to respond to some toxic American politician being criticised.

it it isn't something anyone would want

Why would a person with mild autism not 'want it' ? It's part of who they are and what makes them, them. I know people who wouldn't change, they might wish other people would change they way they deal with them, but they don't wish to change themselves.

I'm talking about debilitating cases on autism not mild autism.

    Catholicism is just weird.

Their fixation on sex is ridiculous. Virgin birth, celibacy for clergy, no sex before marriage, no contraception, no abortion.

A weird cult fixated on controlling the sexual habits of the peasants.

There's a reason they have to beat this crap into children. Question any of it and it immediately falls apart.

Some of them are worse than others, one of them being particularly evil.

    Very much not controversial.

Pugs and French bulldogs are not cute. The breeding of them should discontinue. This flat faced bullsh-t (for god knows what reason) is a disgrace - it causes breathing issues for the poor animal.

I think there should be a minimum charge for social media, say €5 a month payable solely by credit or debit card. It's also baffling that things like Youtube and other platforms are available to children. It was one thing a decade ago but now that we can see some of the damage, it's baffling. We have sales taxes on tobacco and alcohol so why not X and Facebook?

There should be photo ID required to access Sh1t-Tok and SnapShyte and YouTube and Instagram. Over 18s only.

But none of this is controversial in fairness.

Given that nobody wants to stand up to big tech I'd say it is. Nobody's ever going to do it. If they don't want to pay taxes, get them at the other end.

Actually the parents can have full control over what their children are using. Some parents don't know how, and some parents don't even care, and throwing a tax or fee at a problem doesn't make it go away, it just turns a free problem into a fee paying problem.

It’s not as if most over 18’s on social media are bastions of sanity.

effective and responsible parenting has never been less fashionable then it is now…

18 to what age? I'd say most people ARE bastions of sanity.

There has to be some line in the sand. After finishing school makes sense imo.

No but the tax money collected can then be used by the government in positive initiatives to counteract the negative social consequences of excessive social media use.

Most self proclaimed free speech absolutists are giant big whiny snowflakes!

I have no idea how to handle it, but I am just as concerned about the effect that social media has on "adults".

I think mainstream media needs to broaden it’s coverage. Ok I understand vulnerable groups need protecting etc. But the level of coverage seems to be very disproportionate to actual figures. And the focus always seems to be on a particular niche group that the media find popular at particular period in time.
For example a story on my feed popped up from mainstream media outlet. “Autistic boy no school” etc.

Honestly my reaction was veering from “another autism story?” to “that’s terrible”

Then I thought to myself the percentage of autistic people must be really high with all these stories. Diagnosis etc etc. New sensor. rooms built by the likes of Cavan GAA that I heard of before. Would the number of autistic people in Ireland be 20% plus? Surely it must be high? Maybe 30 percent?

So I do an internet search “Number of autistic people in Ireland” Any guesses at the answer?

    3.3 percent!!
Numbers wise those that have autism as a registered disability around 6000!

My reaction was honestly “Ah Jayus”

Yes there was a time when RTE never shut up about cystic fibrosis. RTE are particularly awful for this, constantly deluging their viewers with sob stories usually related to some health problem. As if we have some collective duty to feel other peoples pain, as if noone should be happy unless everyone is happy.

Or you know, anyone with a child with special needs or a disability is aware that the most effective way for getting supports or medical treatment is through advocating for their child. It's far from ideal but entirely understandable on why they're doing that. It's very cynical that you're viewing it that way though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,680 ✭✭✭AllForIt

I'm pretty sure it's RTE that dictate the content, not the subjects of the content. Call me cynical like.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,537 ✭✭✭eightieschewbaccy

And advocacy draws large scale attention to a topic so by default, it makes sense for a topic that is in effect news worthy at that point... And health care failures absolutely are news worthy...

    MY MCO is,

If you have a child with special needs, it is sad and a difficult situation you have found yourself in.

But, YOU have a child with special needs, it is something you will need to navigate, it is not my or everyone else's problem to solve, support and provide for.

If you make the choice to have a child, you need to understand that among the many risks you are taking, your child having special needs is one of them, if you are not resourced, prepared for or willing to take responsibility for this risk, then you should re-think your choice.
