can't send mail through eircom.net

Hi, friend rang me about issue sending email from her eircom.net accout (business so doesn't want hassle of changing to gmail etc)

This only started 2 days ago, so had a bit of a mooch about and thunderbird seemed to be set up fine, so just double checked the outgoing settings for eircom.net mail and came across this

Outgoing (SMTP) Server Settings

• Outgoing (SMTP) Server: mail1.eircom.net (eir broadband customers only)

She uses Sky for broadband, and has for years - so anyone know if this is a recent change?

Also any way of sending her mail out through another service?

If Sky were working before, Sky could have allocated new IP addresses that are not whitelisted on the eircomnet SMTP server. Does Sky still have it's own SMTP server, I wonder?

It's hard to know. Sky could have started blocking access to port 25 outside the sky network. Can your friend telnet to the eircomnet smtp server on port 25? We'd need to see the error messages to help

The surprising thing isn't that it stopped working, it's that it worked at all. Eir's SMTP servers only support outgoing mail for Eir Broadband customers: https://www.eir.ie/helpandsupport/webmail/help/ (see under External Client Setting).

Honestly, at this stage using eircom.net as your business email address is ridiculous.

They’ve effectively been withdrawing the service for about a decade at this stage and it’s only barely supported.

Get your own domain and setup proper email.

This is like getting annoyed because Telex has been withdrawn.
