Lack of long term camping sites in Dublin!

Why isnt there several long term sites, where people in Dublin, crucified by the high rents, living in cars, campers, tents, couch surfing etc. Could park their camper, caravan and mobilehome and live there? Its a scandal that this does not exist! Crucify people on rent etc and wont even provide basic facilities, that could help people out in the short to medium term...

Have you seen the trailer parks in the USA? We have building regulations for residential living and a camper, motorhome or static caravan doesn't meet them.

The solution to the housing crisis isn't trailer parks or allowing long term residents in camp sites.

what is the solution? we going to have abundant and cheap supply in the next few years? nah didnt think so... so just have all of these people living problematically in cars, vans, campers etc, instead of facing up to years of failure and continuing to bury heads in the sand and actually do something to improve peoples situations....

How much do you think it would cost the state to run and manage it? Why would they not just spend that money on actual housing, rather than a clean shanty town (it would still be a shanty town)?

The solution is to build more homes in our cities, the problem is that we don't have the builders to do that.

Trailer parks are not the answer to the problem.

I was thinking those greenfields on the Southside luas near cherrywood would be perfect.

I think it's a good idea. Most trailer parks in America are fine.

It's very low cost for government, they just regulate and zone it.

Residents purchase the camper, trailer or caravan and pay rent to management

because it costs them hundreds of thousand per unit, the output is shambolic... you could built the facilities to house hundreds, for what they would build 3 social houses for...

I agree, but its for cynical reasons they wont do it. But it would actually be a massive improvement or fantastic option for many. Given the state has totally failed on housing and things will get worse...

So you don't actually have a sound plan for how it would be funded.

Funding it would take more money out of the budget to build actual houses - just as building it would. For a ridiculously subpar option that would probably see people die in winter due to not wanting to spend what is required to heat a campervan, and would definitely end up being permanent - there are entire housing estates of "temporary, ten year" prefab houses built around London and SE England in 1946 still there.

Interesting, there are people in my area of Dublin 14 living in theirs cars and campers, no power. So they will die when they actually have proper electric hook ups, shower and cooking facilities?

I think it's a very good question and there really is no excuse for not having facilities like this. Of course, some will moan about trailer parks and the like but it should be as much a part of our housing strategy as building apartments of 3 bed semi ds. Won't suit everyone but will be fine for others.

Personally I think partly the reason is that Irish people have got too snobbish & spoilt. When I was young, a camping holiday in Ireland was fairly normal. But that became too much hardship and with cheap flights and holidays abroad, staying in hotels etc has become more the norm. So the idea that people would choose to live in a mobile home or caravan or even camp now for a period, is beyond those that make such decisions. They look down on it.

There's nothing stopping a person going and staying in one for whatever their max stay is. Then going somewhere else for a week or two, and then heading back again to their preferred location. I know of a YouTuber who lives in his caravan year round (in the UK) and stays in campsites the whole time, works remotely. You can make it work if you work remotely and can keep moving.

Like others have said, the last thing any government wants is to be the government that admitted defeat and created a long term campsite.

The cost of building a home is mostly the cost of meeting building regulations for a habitual building. The garden sheds, static caravans, motorhomes or cars don't meet building regulations. If you want to cut building regulations you could build a 3 bed for about €50k, but it'd be impossible to heat and have no fire safety just the same as a trailer.

Look at the mica and pyrite scandals to see what lack of popper checks leads to, then look at the even bigger scandal of the boom era apartment blocks to see why we need tighter regulations not looser regulations for homes.

Laugh out loud. Two of my mates built rooms in their garden. Ten thousand euro. 70mm warmboarded etc. 25 sq m. Or they could rent slums in house shares for the rest of their lives, because they are only on 50k in dublin...

People are living in cars and tents and your solution is a rolls Royce standard. Are you a politician or planner by any chance?

Why bother with caravan parks than. Just remove building regulations and everyone can live in a shed.
