Free /discounted travel with CIE card in London

Hi.

I have a question re using transport in London.

My husband works for Dublin bus and has free travel card under the CIE scheme in Ireland.

Does anyone know if we can use this card for any buses/rail/underground and get discount in London?

Anyone has experience using it?

There is no such thing as a free travel card for normal CIE employees for Irish travel (there probably is for senior management).

If you are talking about PTI card then the allowances and restrictions are printed on the back, there are differences between the companies.

Last time I was in London I was able to get Tube staff member to use my PTI card to update an Oyster card. I put a tenner on and then went around getting reduced rates on all journeys on the tube. About 5 years ago though!

Long been some inter-recognition of transport staff discounts. Same in aviation with the older airlines.

I've no idea if it still survives though. And it was a discount, not free travel a few years ago

the free travel pass for over 66s in ireland is island wide AFAIK (with some paperwork hoops to jump through), so it's not that unusual a concept.

It entitles the CIE/IE/BE/DB employee to a 75% discount rate on the products listed below. Mainline GB trains are listed as ATOC/GBPR. The ferries are a special flat rate (maybe £6).

It's actually a better entitlement than what GB railway staff get, mainline railway staff unless old British Rail before 1996 don't get discount on London Underground for example, and again only long established Underground staff get discount on the mainline railways.

You are thinking of the social welfare scheme.

There is a separate scheme for transport operator employees.

I think that the poster is making the point that travel schemes can cross international borders between the UK and Ireland, which the other poster seemed to think didn't happen.

In the case of the staff privilege scheme, it is a legacy from the past (a good one!) of the nationalised public transport networks.

I think apart from London Underground and Irish Ferries none of those companies trade under those names any more. In some cases the changes happened 30 or more years ago!

The process for ex British Rail staff is that the attendant in the ticket hall (Borris closed down all the ticket offices) can set the discount on an oyster card from the ticket machine with a special code and I presume that would be the same for you. However you're supposed to have a form from the staff travel office before they do this. Some staff are more knowledgable than others so you might need to shop around. as others have pointed out, i was responding to the comment 'they are two different countries' and i was pointing out there was clear evidence that fare reductions *can* apply across borders.
