Gym T-Shirts

People often ask about Gym T-Shirts on here so I thought I would share a recommendation - I really like the look and feel of the Under Armour polyster T-Shirts but they can be pricey at ~€30 each. I recently ordered a few of these from Sportsdirect and they are very similar copies and less than half the price -

I wouldn't recommend 100% (plastic) Polyester shirts for the gym.

Been wearing the adidas dry fit shirts for about 5 or 6 years. Sizings are great and they last ages.

Superdry, Gym and Coffee, Underarmour... Don't forget good old Pennys 😁 Can't go wrong with a €5 gym t-shirt!

Why? Shirts with cotton cause chafing when sweaty. Fully synthetic materials don't cause as much chafing.

"It is generally accepted that the choice of clothing has an impact on malodor formation (10). This research showed that polyester clothes create a significantly higher malodor compared to cotton clothing after a fitness session and an incubation period. Significant differences were found for the hedonic value and the intensity of the odor, as well as all qualitative odor characteristics (musty, ammonia, strongness, sweatiness, and sourness). This corroborates earlier findings, where higher odor intensities were detected in polyester fabrics ..."

UA tshirts, I always use them, they last a good long time before the sweat gets into them. Perfect.

And the UA Rock ones, lots of Bull heads and stuff, ideal.

Personally I do tend to lift in cotton shirts. If they get sweaty it’s around the neck and under the arms, and I just accept it and wash them after the session, I mean you’re doing that with anything you work out in, right?

There probably is a lifespan with cotton in terms of odour. I like Rogue shirts but after about two years no matter how diligent you are with washing, and using the odd bit of vinegar etc the odour gets bedded in and I bin them. Lately been lifting in some boxy oversized shirts and that’s a change from the muscle fit style, but really it doesn’t matter.

Wifh synthetics from UA or Lululemon you don’t get the odour issue to same extent, and they’re more comfortable for cardio / conditioning for sure, but I like cotton because if a bar is on my back it doesn’t move around as much.

Shorts wise I swear by Lululemon- they’re expensive but wash well, last forever and are very comfortable and practical.

Ive also had Lululemon zip up tops and similar that lasted for years and looked like new. IMO they are worth it.

Do you not wash your clothes after a workout? 🤨

I find cotton shirts better for sweat absorption and last longer. And overall natural vs. synthetic I would choose naturally made.
