Stove Supply and Fit Cost

Hi guys.

Trying to get a stove fitted to the living room of my semi-detached house and I've been getting quotes that are all over the place.

I got one quote from a reputable installer for €2200 for the supply and fit of a 5kw insert into our existing fireplace. That includes liner. I asked how much to widen the fireplace and fit a freestanding and was quoted €4-5k. Was shocked it was that much more.

I went to a stove store and was quoted €2800 for a freestanding stove without liner and €3500 for with liner installed.

Are these all way off or within the ballpark of what I can expect?

Any help appreciated.

Insert stove, all the materials + liners and then the fitting.

The stove was 450 as I got it in a sale and its nothing fancy. My house is tiny so didn't need a bigger one. I think is a 4kw from Boru

We got our existing fireplace widened, new lintel, liner, vent and a freestanding stove supplied and fitted last year. Got 3-4 quotes, all were €4-5K. Dublin.

Ah, so looks like that's the going rate now. Good to know. The quote I got of 3.5k for freestanding doesn't seem so bad now.

Hi,

Just jumping in on this, I see most posters are referencing liners for their stove install - I take it this is a chimney liner?

We are currently looking at replacing our open fire with a stove, have 2 quotes in so far, one supplier said they'd line the chimney whereas the other has said they wouldn't as house is only 12 years old so no need to.

Anyone got any advice/insight into this and the pro/cons for lining?

It's either a building reg or a fire reg and should be done as far as I know. Was told at the time, we paid 4k all in.

We are getting a stove installed and the fitter won't install without a liner even though it's a new build. I was told regulations were the issue but not 100% on that.

I got a stove fitted in my new build house a few years ago, builder insisted that if I were putting in the stove that the flexible pipe be used and vermiculite put in between the flexible pipe and the concrete flue liners. The pipe and vermiculite protect the concrete flue liners from the heat in case they crack.

Anyone recommend a reputable/approved installer in Meath? I can provide the stove.

Also quotes above for 3-4k seem utterly wild, it is usually an hour or two simple labour, and a decent size stove is usually about 1100 (or less if in the trade)

I'm considering swapping a gas fireplace out for an insert solid fuel stove also.

Anyone tackled this and also was it worth it in the end? Understand that the gas fireplace needs to be decommissioned properly. There is also some sort of flue liner installed at present but no idea if it's suitable for a stove.

Main priority is to stop draughts coming in the chimney and have a backup source of heat if needed. Currently have underfloor heating off gas boiler.

Is this a straightforward job?

Biggest issue with gas fireplaces is generally the fireplace itself may not be capable of taking the direct heat generated by a solid fuel fire. Some thing to do with expansion joints in hearth and back insert.

I have a gas fire and in my case the whole fireplace would have to be changed, plus the cost of the stove on top.

In the end I cut a piece of plywood for the opening and siliconed the edges to stop the draught as we never used the fire anyway.

Get some one out to have a look at the fireplace and give you a estimate.

Would take someone like myself who has not done it before 10x as long the first time. That is time i do not have. But please do not try run an argument that you are paying for massive experience, it is not open heart surgery or replacing an engine in an airliner, do it once and have the inexpensive tools to hand and its piece of cake - hence why most neighbours installers are in and out in 90 minutes. Do not get me wrong, I wouldn't begrudge anyone doing well, but an hour, even call it two hours work, and maybe an hours travel, and a bit of depreciation on basic tools.... is not 800 euro of value!

Did my oul lads for the cost of the flue liner, stove, 90 joint and blanking plate, vermiculite, sealants and a top cap. 2 storey house. Took a few hours. I'm an untrained eejit most of the time tbh.

My response was that there was a claim it was skilled work. It isn't. And in no way a 4k quote justifies that. I'm fully aware of business costs and breakdowns.

It’s most definitely a skill to install it,many a stove and fireplace has been put it in incorrectly resulting in a dangerous installation.

OP Choose someone who has a good reputation and experience in it.

Firstly well done for doing it yourself Listermint. I assume that you dropped a 6'' flexible flue liner into an 8'' clay flue chimney. How did you manage to keep the flue centered all the way down to ensure a cushion of, roughly, 2'' vermiculite between flue and clay pipe in chimney ?

I didn't. Because whilst that's a nice to achieve its not really necessary in a perfectly working chimney stack. It's been in 10 years. Should I be worried about the chimney stack and original flue liner exploding ?

You have nothing to worry about, these clay flues can withstand 100 times the heat coming from the flexible flue. Reason I asked is I have a similar installation to do for my sister and was trying to figure out a simple but effective way of centering the flue. I'll probably end up dumping it down and hope for the best 😁

Had two installers with shops give a view on this. One quoted with a flu all the way up, other one said it's just the adaptor at bottom as any chimney built in last 20 years will be absolutely fine (which makes sense to me).

True it should be grand. The adaptor fit better to the flex flue for us. So went with that instead.
