Rename Cork Rd to University Road!

    https://www.waterfordcouncil.ie/projects/public-consultations/index.htm  (No. 2)

Came across this at the weekend. Wondering what people think. Personally, I would be against it. The SETU is in no way an upgrade. Nothing has been upgraded so how could it be. SETU already has a thread so won’t go into it here. Renaming the Cork Rd to University Road is marking the government yet again refusing to address a systematic problem Waterford and the South East faces. It is a typical slap down of Waterford’s ambition by politics and the state. Why should we be marking this? It is saying we accept what happened and us little people down the country are happy with the third rate option we are again given. At a time when there are more stories of people dying because of the governments refusal to provide 24hr Cardiac care in the south east. You know, where does it end with these bloody people.

Cork Road is a long established name, probably in use for centuries. Why do local authorities spend a lot of time and resources protecting heritage on the one hand and then hypocritically try to wipe this type of heritage off the streets in other cases?

Mind you, it doesn't matter what they officially name it. Local people will call it what they always have and stuff the council.

That is an interesting point also. Not sure about the Cork Road. But names like Passage road and Slievekeale Road for example date back to Medieval times. If the Cork Road is the same it is another reason to leave it as is.

Rename it the South East Technological University Road. Part of rebranding this road should involve building new roads in Carlow, Kilkenny and Wexford.

The Cork Road is a 19th century invention. It was a new road to Dungarvan. Previous to that the Yellow Road, Upper and Lower and the Old Kilmeaden Road were the entry points from the west to the city. They terminated at the West Gate (St Patrick's Gate) at the top of Patrick Street.

Cork politics is no friend of Waterford so maybe we should remove any reference of the place here in Waterford. Kilmeaden road sounds better!

I'd suggest that a road route and name that's been around for 100+ years is part of the heritage of Waterford. A damn sight more so than some new branding name for a educational establishment that going by precedent could morph again in a few years.

    Embarrassing carry on.

Born and reared on the Cork Road, what has the Cork Road got to do with WIT or SETU , if it was named after the College, then it would have been called College Road, It will always be called the Cork Road and rightly so.

I'm not in favour of a rename but perhaps the original poster doesn't mean the whole cork road, maybe just the stretch of road in from of WIT?

While the cork road is the cork road, I would actually only refer to the houses opposite woodies area as the cork road, in the Waterford sense.

The rest of the road just became the cork road as it previously was the main n25

Ah right from Good Shepherds out. I should have really opened that link, I presumed this was an old idea pre SETU.

Feck that renaming the street for SETU.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,151 ✭✭✭azimuth17

Why not? SETU is there and isa technological university. It may not be what we want, but the name wont do any harm.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,881 ✭✭✭BBM77

Street and road renaming is a celebration of some person or event. As you said yourself, we did not get what we want. In fact the reality is, at best we will be doing well to keep what we have at worst it is a downgrading. Don’t forget WIT was externally accessed to be working at full university level. The Walton Institute is proof of that. Why celebrate this?

Not being smart. Should we change the name of the Dunmore Road to Cardiac Care Road? Same thing, we are being screwed over there also. Why not do a road renaming to celebrate it?

I get the point and feel the pain!

Why do councillors engage in these silly PR stunts? What absolute clown put their name behind this? We don't even have a proper university.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,694 ✭✭✭914

If they had a pair of balls they would have renamed the road when SETU was WIT and applying for full Uni Status back in the day and be shouting from the roof tops how we needed a stand alone University.

    So you don't like change?

Grand so, back to the red mail boxes so. Can't be changing them to green!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,392 ✭✭✭✭Furze99

Change is fine but the way to go about these matters is to have a plebiscite and let the people of Waterford and it's hinterland decide.

First warning. Anymore silly comments like this and you’ll get a ban.😁

Renaming a road is the least of our worries.

I don't think people realise the severe damage this SETU model will do to Waterford and the South East.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,432 ✭✭✭✭Wanderer78

...oh i beg to differ, i suspect most actually full well know whats going on there! what a scam!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 484 ✭✭Valhalla90

Just look at the hospital group if you want to understand what's going on, the sheer interference from Cork is shocking.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,256 ✭✭✭friendlyfun

Ha ha! It's not even a real university. Getting notions.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,256 ✭✭✭friendlyfun

Oh absolutely. It's going to cause rivalry between Waterford and Carlow. There will be examples of Waterford losing out to a much smaller jurisdiction.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 849 ✭✭✭petronius

    How pathetic to rename it.

It actually Devalues the WIT / Waterford RTC heritage by the rebrand and emphaising it as something new as if what went before was substandard

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,841 ✭✭✭lertsnim

It will always be the R680 to me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,881 ✭✭✭BBM77

Another Mary Roche idea (with Lola O'Sullivan). That woman has lost the plot. She is the same person that was saying the TUSE was not an upgrade and Waterford always comes out badly in government forced mergers. Now she wants to celebrate it with a road renaming.

Or and here's a crazy idea,

People could vote for people we'll call Councillors, these people can them represent the local people and they can propose new stuff and changes to the local area and vote in favor or against it. All very simple and less costly then holding a vote involving everyone for every little thing like you seem to want.

??? That requires a level of trust in local councillors that is not always warranted, a group who are under pressures not just from their local public but political and business interests.

You want a real verdict? Ask the people. Who is afraid of that? After all things like street and road and other names properly belong to the local communities of the area, not those with agendas.

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators, Regional South East Moderators Posts: 28,536 Mod ✭✭✭✭Cabaal

    Honestly you sound super paranoid,

But sure we'll get rid of the council and government and put everything to a vote with every person in the country, best to rule out those agendas.

    🙄

You may not trust your local councillors to make these kind of decisions but obviously enough people do, otherwise they wouldn't have been voted in. I think that's what we call democracy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,392 ✭✭✭✭Furze99

Isn't it strange how some people don't like the idea of local democracy. What are they afraid of? That their agendas are just that and not to the taste of the people?

The very least a local authority can do when they propose a local placename change is to have a local plebiscite.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,881 ✭✭✭BBM77

A local plebiscite is not such a bad idea in this case. Considering one of the councillors that proposed it said TUSE was not an upgrade and Waterford always comes out badly in government forced mergers. So councillors credibility is pretty shaky on this.
