While I don't necessarily think most people are stupid, the removal of religion has left a belief system gap that must be filled for what seems to be the majority of people. These gaps invariably get filled with stupid stuff like we saw during Covid, or with various politics and movements. So the end result is the same as if the majority were stupid to begin with.

There also exists the sort of people who would have been the most religious and righteous in a community. They latch onto their causes and take them to stupid extremes and we call them virtue signallers.

I think intelligent people are more likely to exist without having to fill this gap or display their moral credentials to their peers.

There is a guy i know, big burly etc and he thinks he is the boss and knowlegable on loads of stuff, he is never really challenged though i worked around him a few times. Funny thing he thinks he is the man and everyone else thinks he is a pr1ck.

A lady i know who has a Masters degree in something says. Intelligance has nothing to do with education.

Excellent rebuttal. Your debating skills are marvelous.

Intelligence is the application of knowledge so a strong connection to education. You can have emotional intelligence where you understand emotional responses and apply that knowledge. Your friend having a masters doesn't mean she knows what she is talking about.

Hope battle hasn't hurt your feelings too much by such commoner appraisal.

    You deserve a Darwin Award.

Ireland is relatively equal and doesn't have the old boys club of the UK or USA.

Are you kidding? There is any number of thick-as-pigshít rugby or GAA types in very well paying jobs. Fúck knows what they actually do all day though...

    Life ain't always empty.

Lots of the rugby types are born into old boy networks... meanwhile if you're well known enough in the GAA your ability to do a job does not appear relevant to being hired so it amounts to the same thing.

    Life ain't always empty.

You don't understand what an old boys club is. It isn't an inherited nor because you went to a particular education centre. Yes sports connections help but it is not the old boys club. These people are not high up in many multinational or decent companies. Being on boards of sports connected businesses is not old boys club. Anybody thinking a sports personality makes them good at other stuff can look up hockey star fraud

I've noticed this myself with youtube. My interest is in 10 min bites now more than it used to be. I find it hard to sit into a film as easy as I used to.

First they came for the socialists...

Perhaps you should explain what you do mean, then, instead of what you don't...

There is a lot of beer. And also, the normal IQ is 100.

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,717 ✭✭✭growleaves

The average IQ for Rep. of Ireland is 96 according to a University of Ulster IQ researcher (Prof Richard Lynn).

Although I should probably say that I personally don't think IQ is the last word in these things. The way in which people refract everything through their intellect (blocking out intuition and all spontaneous knowledge) seems to lead to a lot of anti-commonsense conclusions. Not everything is a syllogism.

I'm reminded of the Peter Principle which basically states that people are promoted until they are at a level beyond their competence. So "stupid people" will rise up the promotion ladder until their inadequacies are revealed, and then it's too late to avoid the damage.

Perhaps you could use a term correctly and know what it means in the first place rather than make me explain what you said is not "old boys club"🤗

People with a limited capacity to absorb information, and have very little interest in anything outside a very narrow scope of subjects are generally very happy, I’ve found in my 57 years.

No education can't really make a thicko any brighter.

The thing with modern life is that the advent of social media allowed the idiots to broadcast their stupidity and it seems they are quite proud of it.

And for those that claim it is RUBBISH, could anyone care to explain how the flying fook countries have elected complete fooking morons to lead them?

It is not as if they are hidden from view like in olden days, with little public exposure and wall to wall media.

I can excuse people voting for Trump the first time, as for instance a lot of people in places like the Rust belt were and are totally deluded with mainstream politics and there was a bit of sticking it to the long term political class.

But dearing fooking god, how anyone could continue to support that utter moron after the gaffs, the hounding of good people out of office, the strokes, the ineptitude, so publically selling out his own military and intelligence services, etc, etc is so far beyond rationality.

And before we all laugh at the yanks just look over the water at the Brits.

    Hell look at ourselves.

Look at the modern debate that has become so public in the media the last couple of days, where one side has decided biology, anatomy and physiology mean nothing.

Feelings mean more than facts these days.

We now seem to celebrate stupidity.

And as someone mentioned the Peter Principle, it has astounded me how many chancers reach often quite lofty management positions.

Hell one such possible candidate has been in the news over the last couple of weeks where he is about to leave as head of yet another organisation that appears to be in tatters.

And Linkedin has become a chancers paradise where spoofing is the order of day for the career chancers.

    uh dunno lol

Except it is none of those things and adjusted constantly. The whole point is normal intelligence is 100 and people are above or below that average doesn't come into play at all.

Where I work I deal with people and cars, I don’t which is the most frustrating. So typical weekly example of what I deal with would customer comes in and asks for a set of wiper for their car and I need to know what kind of wiper blade is on it and what length so I say

‘What kind of car is it’?

    Customer: A red one.

And also as anyone else who works in retail will testify when they’re charging someone who wants to pay by card. Customer looks at credit card machine which says on the screen ‘insert card’. Customer asks ‘will I put it in’? I say yeah. Customer looks as screen an puts in PIN number which then displays ‘please remove card’. Customer asks ‘will I take it out’? Seriously boils my blood. Are people so dumb and helpless that they can’t follow a simple instruction like that. Must be cos it happens regularly. The level is of dumb is getting to be regoddamdiculous.

It's possible that second person is actually illiterate.

Oh, I know that, I'm not stupid 😎

I'm not trying to get too scientific about it, just musing as I seem to come across a huge number of totally thick people.

I know the thread is essentially arrogant... don't take it too seriously though, I thought After Hours was for fun ramblings and random thoughts

Never argue with an idiot. They will only bring you down to their level and beat you with experience.

Lynn is to say the least, very controversial. He was made an emeritus professor at the University of Ulster following his retirement, but in 2018 the U of U took the very rare step of withdrawing his emeritus status, because of his controversial work on intelligence and race. Apparently he has connections with American white nationalism.

So I would be careful about anything Lynn says.

This I agree with... lot's of examples of where i was coming from

People are just people. We're all working with similar hardware and gray matter. It has nothing to do with social media any more than it was the things that your grandparents generation said was making your generation stupid (TV?)

Think it was George Carlin who said 'imagine how stupid the average person is. Now imagine that about half the population is stupider than them!".

The world is a complex place. Some get on well, others don't. Some value knowledge and facts, others value street smarts. I'm rarely impressed by people who think young people started going down hill about the time they themselesves stopped being young...
