Council won't do anything unless he's actually homeless and even then it would likely be a hotel or b&b, neither of which are suitable for long term living.

Newsflash, it's not just men the housing crisis is affecting. I've just moved home at 40 poxy years of age because the house I was renting was sold and like your friend, I couldn't find a one-bed.

If you're friend was Ukrainian he'd have a chance, but since he is an Irish tax payer (is he?) He will just have to find a place outside the city and get a second job to pay for petrol to drive in.

A lot of marriages/partnerships going tits up now.

Years ago couples had to tough it out as there was no way they could afford to pay for two houses and they wouldn't be wanted at home

This isn't a dig at you. But I'm curious to know what were the circumstances for you to be still renting at 40? In your late 20s and early 30s did you plan to keep renting long term or have any desire to buy a home?

I bought a house with my sister when I was in my early 20s. She bought me out when I moved in with my now ex husband and I put that money into our house. My marriage ended when I was 30 and I walked away from that house. It was in negative equity so wasn't worth fighting over and I didn't have the energy or inclination for a row at that stage anyway, I just wanted to cut ties and start working on pulling myself back together because the marriage ending left me in pieces.

I've been single and renting since, have had two (unpaid) redundancies in that period and also went back to college so had those fees too. None of which really added up to an ability to buy. I've long since accepted that I'll never buy again but I never envisioned the current rental market either.

Even if my parents were letting me live at home for free (they're not) and I could save pretty much my entire current salary, house prices would likely continue to outpace my ability to save a deposit. And by the time I'd have one saved I'd probably only qualify for a fairly short-term mortgage.

It's a balls.

Talking to a guy(50s) who didnt look like a drug addict who was begging beside the ATM in camden street i was using, got his whole life story, himself and wife split up, she got the house in court and he had to move out , he rented for a while then lost his job , couldnt pay his rent and ended up homeless.

He said welfare offices / Council people put a big effort into housing females but arent really bothered about single men who they feel should be able to get something for themselves easier but many men cant and end up homeless.

Could very easily happen anyone, especially men. Throw in a bit of alcohol abuse and mental health issues and even more so. Men are treated appalling in this country when it comes to welfare and family issues

He must be begging for a reason, homeless people are still entitled to a payment.He may very well have an addiction of sorts.

Welfare are not involved in housing , local authorities are.

There's no direct prioritisation of women over men.

I work in homeless services and see men and women in homelessness being treated equally, you may me certain criteria to be housed quicker than other people but it has nothing to do with gender.
