Reason why this type of firearm is required.

Well guys, sent in my application form for my first rifle last week. I'm getting a Mauser 201. Anyways, I got the form back in the post from the local garda station and they want a written reason for requiring this firearm.

I am wanting to shoot rabbits on my uncles land and this is why I want the rifle.

The dealer just ticked the "other" box which specified vermin control and wrote "vermin control" under the box, and told me that will suffice.

I'm wondering what to write as I don't want to trip myself up?

    Thanks in advance.

    Welcome to the forum.

There is no "trick" involved. The RFD can help you fill out the form, but really he should be expalining to you what he is getting you to tick and why as section 4.2 requires a written explanation as is specifically outlined in the section on the FCA1 form:

FCA1: Section 4.2 - Please explain, on a Separate Sheet, why this specific type of firearm is required

You need only state the reason(s) why you want the firearm. As said above there is no trick or anyone trying to catch you out. If its a couple of lines, or even a single line, then that is all you need write. Something along the lines of:

"I intend to use the firearm, for the purpose of vermin control on lands nominated by me in my application. Vermin being Rabbits and any/all other species considered as pests which can be controlled year round".

    Thats all you need.

Simple and too the point 😀 thanks for the reply cass.

The farm is riddled with rabbits at the minute. Something needs to be done a lot of crop damage around the headlands.

Simple is all ya need. They don't want a novel no more than you want to write one.

What is the Mauser like? Never seen one.

Well it's my first gun so I don't know everything about guns.

    It's a .22

    Timber stock.

The dealer said it would have been a dear gun to buy when it was new.

He also said parts might be hard to come by.

There looks to be a decent quality scope on it. It' was just traded In before I bought it so he hadn't really looked at it and he was surprised by the scope that was on it.

It was €400 and I had the choice between the mauser and a few plastic handle ones, but the mauser just felt right 😀

Good buy for a 1st gun!!! Unless it has been abused, Mausers don't need spare parts!😀 . There are still Mausers of WW2 vintage left by the Wehrmacht working away quite happily in Ukraine today. The 201 is praised in the US shooting groups as a great tack driver. So probably nothing a good clean both inside and out will not sort out when you get it. A decent scope on it and you are sorted. Welcome aboard too.

Well it looked like it was minded when I saw it first and the dealer hadn't even looked at it at that stage. Slight mark in the butt about 3mm long. It's the dark walnut one that was mentioned in some of the articles J.R posted.

Yeah I've seen those articles! Not much info easily available on the gun and I've yet to find a YouTube video of one! I got the letter back from the Guards last Thursday so hopefully the letter will come too pay the €80 fee this week.

Oh ! so it has a character scar then?😆 As any gun should have that isn't an investment grade gun cabinet queen.

Ha yeah I suppose so. Although I am a bit particular when it comes to things 😅 I'll put up a few pictures when I get it.

OK so I've gotten the letter for the Guards to tell me to pay the €80 😁😁 went down straight after work and paid it. Thrilled is an understatement. Should have the license next week with a bit of luck then it's out to the dealer to pick the Mauser up 😁
