Are there many people who don’t bother with safety of maintenance outside of the NCT?

I got a lift yesterday from a coworker as my car was shunted by a lorry and is in the shop getting repaired.

His car makes a juddering noise and swerves a bit when braking. When turning, even gently, the car loses traction.

I was polite when I said this to him. When I got out of the car my jaw hit the floor. His tyres were smooth and shiny.

I was concerned about him and pointed it out. He just shrugged. “I’ll be grand til the NCT next year, sure it’s all a racket anyway”.

I might get a taxi or bus tomorrow. But I don’t want him to feel insulted.

Is this a common sentiment towards the NCT? I really hope not.

Anything which costs money to fix is an inconvenience.

For some bits and pieces it's very common, probably do it meself. For tyres that are completely gone? Nah, come on, if there was no NCT would they never be replaced?

On a related note can somebody please tell me when I should apply for my NCT test. My current NCT runs out on my car on at the end of July. Is there a waiting list ?

i remember some years coming in around Cabra guy in front had tyre with big fist size bulge on inside of back tyre... i was concerned it would blow so when we came to lights blew horn and rolled down window and told him... reply FCUK OFF...

Therein lies the problem with the nanny state bringing in legislation like NCT. For many, it reduces their sense of personal responsibility - sure if it passes the state test it must be fine etc.

Guy two doors from me worked abroad then came home to change jobs.. Somehow came to drive an Audi coupe with a N Ir reg. This appeared on the street last July. He regularly commutes hundreds of miles a week to do a degree in Dublin. Thing is -he hasn't a scrap of paper in the windscreen - no tax , no insurance , no NCT and still the Northern reg. 10 months on. Can't figure what's going on or how he's getting away with it. He's a decent bloke , not short of money -just a strange state of affairs.

Used to work as a tyre fitter, you'd want to see what people used to come in with as regards tyres.

One lad had tyres bald as a egg that failed the NCT n wanted a price to fit new ones for an hour or so til he bought back up to the NCT. Then he would change back to the bald ones! The same genius had kids seats in the back of the car. There's no hope for some people!

You don’t need any discs in the window of a NI reg car. Tax, MOT, and insurance is all accessible online.

Probably has an address in Northern Ireland and gets away with not paying the VRT.

The same people would buy new car and rejoice at the fact that they don’t have to service it or NCT it for 4 years.

I was called a fool for “wasting money” by a neighbour when I brought my 1 year old car for a service. 15 years later in still have her and she’s in perfect nick. Flies through every NCT.

Report him so. This is just careless and dangerous. If anyone knows any drivers like this then they should be reported to the Garda. Tyres are the most important part of any vehicle as they are the only part that makes contact with the road. They are not only putting there lives in danger by driving on bald tyres but other people's lives too.

I can understand laziness but I'll never get my head around the people who never service. Even at a main dealer it costs bugger all and to do yourself at the start especially costs next to nothing and can actually be fun to do. Model dependent of course.

Warn him about how dangerous it is to be driving with tyres like that and that if he is caught driving on the road with them it will more than likely lead to penalty points as well as his car been taken off him and him banned from driving.

While not quite in the same league as dodgy tyres or brakes, it is amazing how many drivers are driving around with one or two broken brake lights, or a broken back light, or no back lights at all because they don't know how to operate their DRLs (like the Garda jeep I saw last night).

Does no-one check their lights weekly or monthly or anything now? Not even commercial drivers of vans or trucks?

My sister brought a 18 year old petrol Mondeo for an NCT in November last, as much for diagnosis as anything else.

The guys comes out at the end and says to her 'you forgot to empty your boot, just do it there and one of the lads will give it a visual and then you're good to go.

Let me enlighten you as to what's failed on it since it PASSED six months ago.

Clutch went (was already slipping big time at the test). Rear tyres were condemned, one was actually an original 2004 factory fit 🤣. Brakes are making more grinding noise than a shipyard. And finally, she was travelling down a local rat-run not long ago and the back exhaust box simply fell off crossing a ramp. Rusted right through.

It's not just a racket, it's a sham. A total and utter piss take.

The tyre would/should have been listed as an advisory.

Exhaust was obviously secure at the time and as for a clutch, I'm not sure how they're supposed to determine its life without full disassembly.

Before it we had all sorts knocking about.

I remember an uncle who took pride in never washing his car. Used have to lift the driver's door up to shut it. Exhaust held up with wire.

I remember what cars were like before the NCT, doors tied shut with bailing twine.

Holes in exhausts, bald tyres. Broken seatbelts, rust buckets etc.

It was a different time. Safety wasn't seen as it is now.

Who remembers 6 or 7 kids in the back of a car, two more in the front and a few in the boot.. not a child seat or seatbelt to be seen.

I fondly remember sitting in a car trailer, while the car was tipping along at 60mph, Noone thought anything off it.

The odd knock or jingle I'll throw it through the NCT if it's close and get them to mark with tipp-ex exactly what bushing is gone... Tyres and brakes, keep on top of those always always. May as well get some value out of my NCT.

Mismatched coloured panels is not an NCT failure and it's disappearance I would think is more to do with insurance companies consigning older perfectly serviceable cars to the scrapheap.

A car that’s failed dangerous should not be driven away from the NCT centre, next time you get your car tested ask the lads how many people don’t drive away with a failed dangerous car. The answer will tell you everything you need to know about driver attitude to safety/rules.
