Socialising/Drinking Buddies

Being a single female in your 30s is fine, but it kinda sucks socialising wise. Most of my friends are married off having kids in different counties/countries and unavailable to head out for a night on the town. But alas, c'est la vie. Is there some kind of online group where I could make friends so we could socialise? I'd imagine there is one in Dublin, but I'm based in Laois, so wonder if there's one there 🤔 Any thoughts?

It's a hard one OP.

You will struggle to meet strangers to socialise with, that are not complete piss heads.

Rural people in their don't 30s socialise so much, or so I observe during my travels. Not sure if this is a recent development, perhaps Netflix etc is an more favourable way to cure boredom than planning nights out.

A hobby is my advice. Something that has competition attached, ie dancing etc

That's not true, I've made friends after school in work, through mutual friends etc. It's just unfortunate for me that they're just not free and single and available to hang out as much as back in the day

when we draw on experience , is it our own or other peoples ? , surely we can only speak for ourselves and that has been mine but ive met plenty others who had the same one , rural folk have many fine qualities but being open to friendship with non locals isnt one of them , thats just how it is

Get yourself up to a rave in Dublin some weekend, few glasses of water ;) you will make any amount of friends, then just meet up with them again some other night etc Country people aren't great for making new friends, I agree with mad maxx.

Sorry not fully on the topic of the tread but I actually find things the complete opposite to this post. I'm from the country and spent 10 years of my life living between Chicago, Berlin and then Australia. I've never had any issues mixing or socialising with whatever new people cross my path. Alas I met a girl from Dublin and I'm now married and living in the big smoke! It absolutely amazes me how many of my wife's friends and her friends of friends are still are in large social clicks from there school days!! Since I didn't really know anyone when moving back to Dublin, a lot of my home mates are living in different countries. I've started hanging out with my wife's friends husbands as one does in my circumstances. Its crazy these lads entire circle of friends are still their secondary school mates, I'm not saying that there's anything wrong with it but I do find it bizarre. Coming from a small village in the midlands, me and most of my friends had to leave as soon as we finished school for college and then work reasons, so staying in full time contact can become hard.

I think OP was making the initial point about rural folk who don't really stray far from their own little towns and communities throughout their lives.

The small town folk. Those who have a routine and will never adjust it. Working in Galway city, and still living in a house within walking distance from the parents and family in one of the small satellite towns. They genrally have very limited conversational skills and as a consequence can be really difficult to form friendships with.

On the other hand, rural folk like yourself who have travelled and lived across the globe, are some of the most socially flexible,confident and interesting people I've ever met.

Yes I get that, there's definitely an element of that in some parts of rural Ireland. I suppose I was triggered by that broad brush rural people were painted with by the poster. Although I find where I am from though sadly that it is now nearly the opposite, unless you have a decent size farm or in a family business there is not a lot for people from where I am from, I think I'm the only 1 of my school group who is actually back living in Ireland, never mind back home! Also I'm now well aware that I'm gone completely off trend on this topic.... 🙈

It appears some people think living rurally is synonymous to being socially inept. You're welcome to share your experience. Yeah I could imagine it would be hard for ye to maintain friendship from school based on those circumstances and it doesn't help they're not even in the country anymore. My sisters fiancé is in a similar boat to you, most of his friends aren't around so he's made friends with her friends husbands.

Chicago, Berlin etc are big cities ,im referring to what its like for people who moved to rural areas they weren’t born in ,you are also referring to the rural area you grew up in so you have a different perspective entirely, people usually assume the area they grew up in is very friendly

Very good idea. I worked in library service and book clubs were a huge social force for people in them, and led to many summer outings, winter nights in restaurants/pubs, coffee meet ups.

This is very true. Also I think people living in isolated rural areas who don’t drive are at a huge disadvantage socially, if they totally depend on lifts or taxis. Or even people who take a drink in such a scenario are in precisely same situation.

Yep this is what I have found since I moved back home and now living in Dublin. Whereas me and all my friends all move to different parts of the country to study once we finished school. My wife and all her circle studied in either DIT, Trinity or UCD. Not one of them went outside Dublin once they finished school and all lived with their parents while in college. When you look at it that way yes I suppose its easier for them to keep in contact with their close circle throughout all those years as they have never really been far apart.
