Turning bitterly cold Wednesday 30th on, sleet and snow potential, frost/ice

This is a few days out but we are looking at a seismic change in the weather probably from Wednesday. People really feeling it this time after the recent Spring like weather.

Some really cold air becoming entrenched in a biting northeasterly wind from midweek.

    Potential hazards:

    • Cold temperature
    • Snowfall
    • Frost/Ice

The charts will be back and forth the next couple of days but there is a lot of consistency at a reasonable timeframe that things are going to get a lot colder.

Looking at sharp frosts and icey conditions inland and a scattering of potentially heavy hail, sleet and snow showers. The details on the precipitation will become clearer over the weekend. It looks good for some snow at the moment. The trend is that way. I also wouldn't rule out a frontal snow event developing at some point.

Temperatures look to really struggle to, at best, mid single figures through Wednesday, Thursday, Friday. And of course very cold nights.

So let's see where this goes!! I'm not saying i'm excited, but i'm excited 😎

As my mother used to say, nothing as bad as a long cold bright day when the ewes are yeaning.....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,297 ✭✭✭pauldry

Quite normal as I remember it being 2c in April a couple of years ago with snow on the ground. Considering our Winters seem to only start in February nowadays April is probably the olden days equivalent of February. Also quite normal for Ireland to be punished for getting warm pleasant weather. The cheek of us.

So no rush to start planting my spuds and onions then. 👍

That was my first thought, the ewes and lambing in full swing.

Feck. Was starting to enjoy the warmer weather

Looks like it is turning to rain/sleet for the Naas area. Will see how it changes.

Next Friday before the east coast sees anything of note temp wise as far as I can see?

This thread feels premature or maybe my bias is blinding me as I'm very much done with winter now. I've had the shorts on all week!

This is gonna be a shock to my system when I arrive in on Wednesday morning from the UAE 😣

The ECM 12z is showing a band of rain sinking down the country from the north on Thursday turning to snow over the east as it begins to clear off and strong winds too. It'd be interesting if it verified!

    Winter is coming....

Just like last April, many eastern and some southern areas could see their first snow next week after a snowless winter.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,414 ✭✭✭✭Kermit.de.frog

Could be looking at potential orange warnings for snowfall later next week. Still ample time for changes either upgrades or downgrades.

    On track overall.

    Mother of God.....

Winter 2020-21 was snowier than most recent winters though. Here we had lying snow on December 31st 2020, January 7th/24th 2021, and a few more days during the February 2021 easterly. It was the first winter to bring lying snow in all 3 winter months since at least 2009-10, although all of them were dustings apart from January 24th, which brought a bit more.

2017-18 was the snowiest winter I can remember.

It's gonna be some shock to the system the week ahead!

Normally I’d be expecting the above chart posted by Kermit to go pear shaped and for downgrades to appear but of course now that we are almost in April and very few of us want snow at this time of year, I just know that chart will come to fruition!

We have one bag of turf left and only a couple of litres of oil. Had hoped the heating could stay off …….

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,147 ✭✭✭Ms2011

God I remember that winter, we'd just moved into our new house that only had a small wood burner in the sitting room for heat. We got 3 dumpings of snow that year....that was cold 🥶

Kerosene at record high prices. Smokeless coal at record high prices. As for electric prices?Shudder.

A shock to the system. Some say.

A shock to the wallet more like.

    ^^^^^^

have the hot water bottle at the ready

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,261 ✭✭✭OldRio

I've no problem with the hot water bottle or layering up. It's what we do anyway. But for some..............

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,067 ✭✭✭✭fryup

all central heating should be switched off from April 1st to Oct 31st, we're in wartime rationing after all

Love these sudden spring switch arounds. From summer like weather back to winter. I know any snowfall in April is pretty useless but I like the novelty factor of it .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,628 ✭✭✭Billcarson

Thats what I try and do most years anyway or at least mid April to mid October.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 48,336 ✭✭✭✭km79

My house is always in war time rationing so :@

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,067 ✭✭✭✭fryup

yes it's doable ....but i know there'll be some who will jump down my throat at such a suggestion😐️

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,164 ✭✭✭mcburns07

There’s really no need for it during that time anyway, I’ve turned all the thermostats down to 18c in our house now to try prevent the heating from kicking in.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,718 ✭✭✭✭Larbre34

Just another mahoosively overhyped thread from KDF.

Some upper level sleet lads and risk of patchy night frost, that's literally it lads

And even the frost is not guaranteed with the breeze.

    Ridiculous carry on.

I agree. Yes colder than what we have had all week but there will certainly be no need for yellow warnings, let alone orange. Awful hype.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 176 ✭✭teddybones

Same, and we have a house full of covid but still… I love snow

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,718 ✭✭✭✭Larbre34

It feels like every house is full of Covid at the moment. God knows a good snowy and frosty spell would keep folk at home and kill the bugs.

But it's not going to happen.

The idea of using random dates for heating with the temperature fluctuations in this country is odd IMHO.

    Anyway each to their own.

This is getting downgraded already, snow risk now looks mostly focused on the UK mainland. Still will be a fairly chilly spell but today it's looking more like a spell of cold rain from the north and maybe some patchy frost by night.

At this stage I don't care if this downgrades more, it's far too late in the year for enjoyable snow. I just want Spring/Summer from now on.

A white Easter is statistically more likely than a white Christmas

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,414 ✭✭✭✭Kermit.de.frog

You seem to have a nasty habit of personalised attacks any time a thread is opened.

The forecast has not changed to any great degree nor is there any "overhyping" whatsoever in the OP. Can only go on the data presented at any given time.

You are reading what you want to read, as usual.

I'll update later this evening. 🙄

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 48,336 ✭✭✭✭km79

I have Covid . My wife had it a few weeks ago but the two kids haven’t as far as we know

Its a lot easier isolate when the weather is good and we can all sit outside as we are lucky enough to have a huge garden in a rural setting

Also the idea that low temperatures kill it is nonsense .

Sure if cold weather helped the trajectory of viral diseases would be down in winter and up in summer

    Not the other way around

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,718 ✭✭✭✭Larbre34

You seem to have a nasty habit of talking rubbish about the weather.

Believe me, if you weren't opening foolish weather event threads about nothing at all, I wouldn't be having a go. But you are, so.....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 66 ✭✭Zogabomb

This is a weather forum. There is a sudden change in weather due this weekend that is even been talked about by Met Eireann. It's kinda like complaining about a thread in the Soccer forum about an upcoming Ireland match because it's a friendly.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,912 ✭✭✭sparrowcar

I'm sure most people in these forums look forward to Kermits posts quicker than yours.

If you don't like it then hit that ignore button... simples.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,414 ✭✭✭✭Kermit.de.frog

mmm, you're not forced to read any threads in the same way you're not forced to be an asshole.

    You choose to be.

P.S I opened two threads this whole winter and this is the second!

You seem to be intent on spoiling the enjoyment of the weather forum for some reason. Some of us have been here for years. It doesn't always work out but mostly it does - and whether it does or not is not even the point.

Why do you care? Just enjoy it and make your points on the weather like everyone else.
