If you are vaccinated and now the virus is endemic we have to live again, how can a trip to the post office be a covid risk, if you are nervious wear a mask and wash your hands we all suffered the last 2 years

Curious one line taken out of the article to create a thread but here goes 🙄

The decision is absurd and its quite clear its not because of attempts to combat fraud but to prop up post offices. There's simply no evidence this bizzare measure will achieve anything but additional costs to both taxpayers and in some cases Jobseekers.

Intriguingly it would seem the department has no faith in its own security/ anti fraud measures which include the issuing of a PSC and having a verified mygovid account. Im curious if its a case the department want to verify recepients are for example in the country, why not have them sign on in an intero centre fortnightly, monthly 🤔 but of course they can't have that, instead pack small rural Post offices and cause as much inconvenience and expense to SW Recipients as possible. At a minimum Genuine Jobseekers with fully verified mygovid accounts should be entitled to have their payment made electronically.

The notion SW recepients are suddenly going to spend more in expensive local supermarkets is simply absurd. This is all about fee income for the local post office, nothing more, nothing less.

Talk about a backward approach 🙄

“We could cut out all of that [turning up in person] and just pay people electronically,” one TD said.

One man living near the Cork-Kerry border told The Journal that the change means he now has to drive over 55km to a post office in order to collect the payment, which brings his fuel cost to between €45 – €50 a week.

Others have also criticised the move on social media. One person wrote on Twitter that it was “back to an ancient and outdated system” that answers the need of the Post Office but doesn’t answer the needs of the people.

Another person said the move made “absolutely no sense“, while another said it would be a financial burden on people as many post offices have closed in rural areas, and with “little to no public transport”, it would be difficult for people to receive supports if they didn’t have a car.

The idea that making people go to the post office will support local businesses like An Post is laughable. I couldn't afford to be spending money in my local post office, where everything costs 5 to 10 times the price of things in Lidl.

So if it were me, I'd be traipsing over there, taking my social welfare payment, and walking out again.

I'm considered very high risk by my medical consultants but am expected to teach every day, where children are unvaccinated, can't distance and don't wear masks. I'm sure he could find work in lots of places if he genuinely wanted, but there's certainly no excuse not to collect his money in person. We have seen the lengths some people went to to try and claim a dead man's social welfare recently.

An Post's stamps aren't 5 to 10 times the price of Lidl's stamps because Lidl don't sell stamps.

No but my local post office is also a shop, as are most (all but one or two, I think) of the other post offices within a 20 mile radius from me. So the idea that people might support the business of the post office owner, simply by having to go there to collect a payment, is probably unrealistic.

I don't buy stamps, so that's moot.

No I'm not a fellah at all. I see no problem with unemployed people going to the post office to collect their money. It will give them something to do instead of lying in bed all day.
