Can't read it as it's behind a paywall. Why would they reduce by that much when it is in high demand?

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,925 ✭✭✭GM228

Because "in light of the uncertainty that surrounds the global economic and oil market outlooks, and the need to enhance the long-term guidance for the oil market..."

    Preas release from OPEC

All it will do is up oil and gas prices even more.

All it will do is up oil and gas prices even more.

Exactly which why I said why would they do that when all it will do is rise the prices.

I was actually delighted the past week, two weeks where the price of petrol has come down and in my eyes I thought it was going to stay that way then this happens and prices will shoot up.

Exactly, they can see that while demand for oil won't evaporate it will decline in the coming decades.

So why not make obscene profits now while demand is very high?

Very coincidental that it came about when the EU agreed the cap the price of Russian oil.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,037 ✭✭✭patnor1011

There is no such agreement yet. There is a will but there is opposition to it too. We will see what happens in Prague.

Apparently DCI cards saying diesel will be 205.⁹ on Sunday.

Anyone got a txt/email that can confirm this.

Also local FB page saying a station has gone from 188⁹ to 201⁹ , 13¢ jump

OPEC are showing that Russia remains a friend and they will throw Moscow a bone.

Diesel is 199.9 in Newbridge about an hour ago. It never really got too far below 189 in recent weeks.

Even at €2/litre the performance, comfort and range of diesel is hard to beat. I'm doing perhaps close to 40k Kms per annum in a 5 year old diesel .... There's nothing EV that would appeal to me that I would justify. An i4 potentially but €70k on a car doesn't appeal.

It’s always amazing how quickly the price increases jump at the sniff of any oil price jitters

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,086 ✭✭✭mikeecho

I'm more amazed that there is never a 9 to 14¢ reduction overnight.

Anyway, brimmed the two oil burners today for 1.87⁹/l ( less 8¢)

It's great to have threads like this, and posters who give the heads up on price trends.

You are right it never drops quickly but if a barrel goes up the price shoots up for us general users even though the fuel you are buying on the day would have been bought cheaper.

The only thing diesel will have over an ev is range, comfort and performance won’t be close in most cases. Maybe an ev doesn’t suit your use case but that’s a different story.

Well my post was very much about my case hence why I detailed my annual mileage etc etc 👍

Perhaps in your case your EV is more comfortable and has more performance than equivalent ICE powered vehicles but that's a different story .

Performance, comfort and range was in context an overall package also ...take away one and the other two don't really bring much benefit for many . .perhaps not in your particular case but that's a different story.

You must be very happy with your EV if you feel the need to throw a spiel at someone driving a 5 year old diesel ⛽

How exactly is an EV more comfortable in winter when you are wearing your hat, gloves and scarf on anything longer than the school run? In fact, you might be getting a lot of whinging about the cold on that school run too!

Is your knowledge of EVs entirely based on the G-Wizz?

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,966 ✭✭✭Patser

Most EVs can preheat while plugged into mains - can have time set up in advance too, like an alarm clock. So lovely, toasty, defrosted car waiting for you when you come out. Enjoy scraping the ice off your windscreen in your hat, gloves and scarf as kiddies shiver in back seat; if we're going to go to that level of 'Won't someone please think of the children!' debate

Edit: To be clear, don't need to be plugged into mains either, just more sensible that way. And reason I say most EVs is because of the fecking Twizy - can't think of any except that that can't pre-heat Edit Edit - and apparently the G Whiz. Edit Edit Edit - annnd the Citroen C Zero

Sometimes the house is colder than the EV. I can preheat my EV on the app which I generally do 10-15 minutes before leaving. I could even do that on my 2014 nissan leaf years ago!

I've been making soundings and new EV's right now are extremely expensive, if you can get one at all.

So the premium you are paying means it will be a long time until the fuel savings are paid back.

I've also heard (second hand) of somebody who wanted to trade in a 3 yo EV for a new one of similar spec and was given a pittance of a value, like 1/3rd of new.

Now if that is the norm, then new EV buyers are effectively being ridden.

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,966 ✭✭✭Patser

That is the bigger issue with EVs alright WaterWelly, their price is silly high. Due to massive demand, and limited supply most manufacturers have gone into selling larger, more premium sized cars to maximise their profit - see the likes of Kia and Hyundai who normally specialised in gigh bulk, modest profit lines now looking for €50k on average for their EVs.

But there's a big change coming, China has invested massively in EVs over last decade and now that they are fully up to speed, their car makers are looking to export. The MG4 just about to launch at €27,500 for a Golf/Focus sized EV is the 1st of that wave - getting 9/10 on Top Gear, before you say anything of quality. Ora Cat will be the next one to watch next year. And by then SAIC and Geely will be really starting to ramp up.

As for trade in, deales have always been that way. Most EVs hold their price amazingly well. I'd pretty much get my money back on my i3 that I imported 4 years ago. Someone collecting a Tesla Model 3 now, would be able to sell it for €5k more than they paid due to demand.

My 2012 Citroen C Zero can't preheat when plugged in either, which is a right pain at times. But hey, its almost free commuting so can't complain too much.
