Gender hasn’t replaced sex, they’re still regarded as two distinct concepts - separate, but of equal value. Old school transsexuals are still regarded as old school transsexuals, as are new school transsexuals… in medicine at least. Yep, the term transsexual is still used in medicine, American medicine more so than European medicine. They’re also quite slow to forego the terms ‘mentally retarded’, but education is helping people to realise the negative connotations of terms like that which are completely benign in their own very specific context. Outside of that very specific context - gets a bit tricky.

Well you say people can’t have it both ways, as if there’s a contradiction between gender and sex. That’s why it appears to you as though there’s a contradiction, because you’re conflating gender and sex, when they are two distinct concepts of equal value. That’s not “having it both ways” as though they contradict each other. It’s very similar to the way in which you’re conflating sociology with biology to make the point that only women can give birth, when in reality it’s really not your decision for anyone else, and nobody has to regard your declaration as being of any use or utility to them. It’s of no utility whatsoever to a pregnant man. But you can be guaranteed that medical professionals tasked with their care will find the information useful as it pertains to patient care and aftercare and all the health related issues that can complicate pregnancy.

Gender is certainly not a term that was ever mainly used in the US, and certainly as the country who are the largest producers of the worlds pornography, the US has no qualms about using the word sex, in polite company or otherwise, where they used refer to women as ‘the fair sex’, a commentary not just on expectations of their physical appearance, but also referring to what was thought to be their diminished capacity as a consequence of biology, y’know - be easy on the eye, women are to be confined to a domestic role, keep a tidy house and well-behaved children, keep their husband happy by having sex on command, no question as to whether they did or didn’t want to… that sort of thing.

Should anyone else who disagrees with your opinion be shouted down Maryanne? Because that’s essentially what you’re demanding, only from the opposite perspective. Of course we cannot change our biological identity, but what you mean by that, and what someone else means by it, may carry completely different meanings.

There’s no question that women fought and died for equality. Equality in status, in areas where they are not equal with men, and still aren’t equal with men in a lot of social and political aspects. It certainly wasn’t all for nothing as what began as women’s suffrage to gain women the right to vote (at a time when most men didn’t have the right to vote either), became the women’s liberation movement in the 1960’s, and around the same time as Simone de Beauvoirs book “The Second Sex” was published, John Money was formulating the concepts of promoting a terminological distinction between biological sex and gender roles.

Neither of them are particularly well-known outside of Feminism and Sociology, but that’s the murky stinkholes where the modern Western conceptualisations of sex and gender emanated from, and that’s not to mention Kinsey promoting his own weird notions about sex and sexuality which determined the course of that particular field of study up until recently when people began to realise his ideas were all a ball of shyte.

I don't find the other opinions offensive, I'm curious why folk hold them . Virtue of the Gender Recognition Act I thought gave recognition to those by changing that definition. I understand a trans man lost a case recently in 2019. The law will eventually change whether we like it or not...

Men can't give birth. That is all.

I’ll be honest LB, there’s plenty of opinions I find offensive, and yes, sometimes to the degree that I would want to punch their lights out, like if anyone ever insulted my mother. Pope Frank would understand, not too sure ‘bout what would Jesus do if anyone reminded him his mothers a virgin 😏

But yeah, ‘course the law will change, as do all laws with time. Me personally I’ve never really cared about the whole “trans” prefix as to whether I’m speaking to, or about man, woman or child, or preferred pronouns or any of that shyte, I’ll treat people with respect and dignity and support, not because my religious beliefs compel me to, but simply because I see myself in them…

(with their consent, of course 🤨)

What about the women that cannot menstruate, ovulate, conceive, give birth?

Are they women? Half women? Lesser women?

Then lets change it completely. We'll have 2 types of people. They can be gay, straight, bi, trans, helicpotors, doesn't matter. They will fall into 2 categories. Those that birth, and those that don't. In the meantime, I'll stay single forever because it would be [something]ist of me to ask if what I perceive to be a natural born bioligical woman if they were a different sex at any previous point, but also would be [something]ist of me to have a negative reaction to finding out further down the line. (That's totally the only reason I'll be staying single. Really....)

Of course they are women. Many of whom have fertility issues. Doesn’t make them any lesser a woman.

Probably will stay single because you're desperate to come up with weird hypotheticals where you're the victim for some reason.

    Nope.

    Gender is a biological construct.

There's no such thing as a trans newborn.

Why is this such a difficult concept to grasp?

  • Registered Users Posts: 361 ✭✭Gentlemanne

Not sure anyone is arguing that the newborn is transgender

Please, do continue to psychoanalyze me based on a single anonymous post. I'm sure you're perfect and qualified to do it.

Oh I'm absolutely not qualified but this isn't the first time I've seen someone on boards say they're going to be single because transgender people exist. Really weird non-sequitor.

Still I can almost guarantee it's a hypothetical that will never happen to you - in part because trans people are a tiny minority, and in part because (from the trans people I know personally) they go out of their way to not get romantically involved with someone prejudiced against them, it's just not a good idea.

You're thinking too much into my off the cuff remark...

Woman pretending to be a man gives birth to a baby. What’s the big deal?
