"Do you think you have the chance to be more competitive this season?"

    Long pause...

Otmar is fond of the pink

In a way I'm happy to see the pink, it was certainly unique for F1 and is definitely eye catching. Just not sure I want it on an Alpine!

So far the Williams livery is probably the coolest.

How are Alpine running two liveries. Didn’t McLaren have to get an exemption for the Gulf livery last year. And I thought those exemptions could only be granted for one race in the year.

Because someone is willing to pay more money to rin the livery for 2 races. Rules in F1 are always trumped by someone with money.

The Gulf livery was very popular last year in Monaco. Good business.

I thought you were allowed change livery once. So Alpine are getting better value for their sponsors by doing it at the start of the season. Teams could also do it at the back end of season if they wanted to too if that's the case.

Some teams do get really bad luck with commerative liveries though. 😁

    This too shall pass.

Oh yeah i forgot about that one. It was good too. The Gulf mclaren was cool looking.

So what are they doing, running a livery for testing, and then the "main" livery will be for the season?

Could they try and "do a BAR" and run two liveries at once?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,029 ✭✭✭✭duploelabs

The BAR lucky strike/555 split was a one off and apparently the FIA won't let it happen afain

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,134 ✭✭✭eviltimeban

And they didn't allow BAR do what they originally wanted to do, which was to run two liveries, 555 on one car and Lucky Strike on the other.

Your argument seems to be that the rules should be ignored in the event that the outcome might make for more competitive racing. That opens quite a can of worms if you start applying it to everything doesn't it?

If the purpose of a filming day is to allow the teams to test then they should just drop the pretence and call it a test day and write that into the rules. At the moment the rules very specifically forbid it to be used for testing but the teams still do so to varying degrees (from "lets confirm the car fires up and makes it around the track reliably" to "lets cover the car in sensors and gain a ton of aerodynamic data to apply to updates") depending on how willing any given team is to take the piss.

They're running the pink livery for the first two races, then the blue and pink for the rest of the season. I prefer the blue and pink as it has more of a team identity, the other livery just looks too much like a Force India (understandably given it's the same title sponsor running the same sponsor colours)

The rules don't allow two liveries at once, but do allow the livery to be changed, I guess getting a couple of races in full BWT livery will get BWT enough footage to use in advertising spreads and whatever else they want for the year, while the main livery for the rest of the season is important for Renault to push the Alpine brand. I'm sure it was all part of the negotiation of how much BWT were willing to pay in sponsorship vs how much brand exposure they get in return. I wouldn't be surprised to see this as a thing other teams pick up on in future. It's slightly different to the one-off livery like McLaren did with Gulf but achieves a similar result.

The thing that most disappointed me with the Alpine launch (aside from it being far too long and meandering and taking a confusing approach to revealing show cars / livery cars / the real car) was when they kept talking about a long term plan and moving up from 5th in the constructors gradually. They're a full manufacturer, they've been a full manufacturer for years. They should have already had a long term plan. This year of all years with the new regulations should be the one where that plan comes to fruition. If they're not aiming to win races and challenge for championships this year then I don't know why they're there.

I'm not sure I made an argument at all. I described what they do at the moment. They use the 100km filming day to shake the car down. I didn't say they do a test on the filming day. I said they use it to "do a basic shakedown". That's why they almost all schedule it for before the first test - because it gives them 100km to do a basic shakedown and do some filming.

I'm not sure what your point is and I think it's based on a misreading of what I said.

I'm not saying it looks bad but anyone else just not feel much of a reaction seeing this on track? Kinda reminds me of the bulky IndyCars.

The AT coming in HOT here. New nose and super interesting tunnels on the side, worlds apart from the renders.

The AT looks unreal in that shot alright.

So looking into this livery business the F1 regulations state...

9.1 Both cars entered by a Competitor must be presented in substantially the same livery at every Event, any significant change to this livery during a Championship season may only be made with the agreement of the Formula One F1 Commission.

Apparently it's an easy enough sell to the commission as long as it's rooted in a historic guise. Just changing liveries for sponsorship needs, is something I could see them clamping down on very fast, as it's just a bit too Indycar.

No. It's officially called "pre season running".

I really want to see lap times from Barcelona. I know they won't be representative, but still. It would give us a bit of an idea.

Haven't been this excited for a new season for a while!

First pictures of the Red Bull are starting to surface from Barcelona. The most radical looking car yet?
