It happens all year round...retail manager plays the same cd on a loop all day. Worse cd things happen at Christmas.

Could these practices be viewed as illegal torture. I think they did similar in military breakdown inducing torture at Gauntanimo Bay.

My local Central petrol station plays music on a tanoy outside. And turns it up when there's something going on in the town.

It couldn't possibly be, because the company is called Tannoy (https://www.tannoy.com/). It's totally and utterly preposterous to claim they were using either a Tanoy or Tanoi system for such purposes. This thread has lost all credibility, despite the solid parallels between Centra and Guantanamo Bay.

I always get those two mixed up to be fair. Could happen to a bishop............some funny stories from the Whitehouse days though when I used to tell a staffer to go to Guantanmo to get me a chicken fillet roll and packet of Tayto and they'd arrive back 3 days later with it.

Similar thing happened with the Kenyan. He promised to close Guantamo but that was only because he preferred Spar and had also confused Guantanamo with Centra.

I used to work in Champion Sports back in the day and head office sent a CD of the same mix to all stores once a month or so. You'd be driven demented within the first week listening to the same 10-or-so songs, in the same order, on rotation all day every day. We used to have a smashing ceremony on the last day for each CD.

The year I was there for Christmas we smashed the Christmas CD the second the store closed on Christmas Eve. Only to be informed by our next-nearest branch that we were supposed to play it til January 6th. Oopsie. That was actually my last day in the job so I've no idea if they had to ask head office for a new one and make up some excuse for what happened to the original or what.

If a CD was particularly bad, we'd just play our own music (strictly verboten) and have a mole in the O'Connell St. store ring us if any of the head honchos looked like they were heading our way.

Just gonna ignore the first 15 odd posts ignoring the main question of the post...

Luckily, I've never worked someone at Christmas and had to listen to non-stop Christmas songs. That would actually do my nut in. I'm not a fan of Christmas anymore, too commercialised and starts waaaaaaay too early. But the songs... Aside from a few, most are terrible and hearing them on repeat, ad nauseam could drive me to quitting.

I worked in a restaurant once, 2 floors and the upstairs was only opened during lunch and when evenings were expected to be busy. So once lunch was over, it needed a full clean and set for the evening. This was usually done by 1 person. I had to do it a few times. One time, he had a fecking David Gray CD on. I was genuinely ready to kill myself. The most depressing cnut I've ever listened to, and since then you can add Paddy somethingorother, basically Irish David Gray. How people enjoy that tripe is beyond me. Music to kill yourself to.

I see lots of shops banning Christmas songs because it 100% affects staff morale. Even those who love Christmas would surely get sick of listening to the same 40 odd songs on repeat, every day, all day... Or even worse, a copyright friendly version that's cheaper and sang by people rejected from the initial culling phase of American Idol.

Then again, I consider work torture anyway so...

I really feel for retail staff, particularly this time of the year and they're mostly so so professional and polite. I don't know how they do it, all we can do is be as polite and patient as they are in our dealings with them.

Regarding the opening post, I 100% agree xmas cd's and playlists since halloween are tortuous and unfair. They shouldn't be allowed till after the first weekend in December.
