With McGregor, that clown Kavanagh and now this fool it's obvious that MMA fighters are running roughshod over the plain people of Ireland. An entire generation of children are growing up to think that these thugs are "heroes" and will be inspired into a life of gurrierism and blackguardery thanks to their influence. It's well known that MMA fighters struggle to control their temper, more than any other sport in my opinion. What do you think we can do to "combat" the violence inherent in Mixed Martial Arts outside the ring? More funding for proper sports like boxing?

The MMA ‘scene’ in Ireland seems to be little more than poorly-educated scumbags with links to organised crime hanging around gyms comparing neck tattoos. All man buns, tweed suits, foetal alcohol syndrome faces, and unresolved anger issues.

According to the OP it is "well known" there is a particular problem in MMA. Have to admit it was not known to me. Maybe if the OP wants to "combat" the issue - rather than just use a phrase like "proper sport" to start another polarised fight on boards - they might consider establishing this "well know" fact as fact first and make people aware of it.

I scrolled back over all the posts including mine and no one is saying there is not a problem. So I am not sure who you are addressing this post to. What I said - for example - is that you declared the problem "well known" and I certainly do not know it. So "well known" to who exactly?

Your links are not great material to support the claim either though. They are a very small handful of single events related to single people. That is about as useful as saying "It is well known men sexually abuse their daugthers" and then paste in a mere 20 stories of where this has happened. Anecdote is not evidence. A tiny amount of anecdote does not indicate a "well known" problem.

Worse though the small number of anecdotes you went for are not that convincing. One link does not work at all. While another link said there was "No charges" in an "alleged" event where there was "lack of sufficient evidence" the event even happened. So you went trawling the net for links to evidence this is some kind of indicitive problem and among the paltry number of results you found - at least one of them is heresay and may not even have happened.

There are literally hundreds of professional MMA fighters and any number of amateur ones and you could only find 6 links - 1 broken - and one merely allegations - and three of them about the same person (McGregor). So in essence you managed to produce - 2 links really.

That's hardly evidence of a "well known" problem now is it? You'd find more evidence of violence in communities like the Amish and the Jains than that paltry turn out :) There are genuine problem in the world worth combatting without trying to manufacture more things to wring the rosary beads about and worry about. So far it seems "nothing to see here" is the best description of your thread.

Now a useful question to ask might be - given the number of people under psychological distress who explode needlessly over things like being asked to wear a mask - why does it become news worthy if the person doing it happened to have done MMA five years ago?

Why not? That is what his school specifically is? An academy for young black kids and their fathers. It is just the first example that sprung to mind because I have quite a lot of respect for the man and what he has done and how and why.

The point - again - being that the bringing discipline and martial arts into someone's life is a good thing. Describing doing so as "solving problems with violence" is a pretty straw man distortion of what has been done.

As time goes on I become increasingly less convinced that martial arts themselves holds any inherent special powers of discipline to "fix" a broken young man.

You often hear the same thing said about military service, when there's no objective evidence to suggest that such a move makes someone suddenly a better person.

Most likely, involvement in anything which inspires focus and confidence in the young man - be that martial arts, soccer, cycling, computer programming, even dungeons and feckin' dragons - will give them an outlet for their energy, a support group of friends to talk to and a way to resolve their anger that doesn't involve violence.

I know all too many people who were scumbags starting martial arts, and remained scumbags, albeit ones now trained to fight better. Men who were good people but directionless when they took it up, remained good people, but gained a better understanding of how to be happy people.

Unfortunately this trope of "martial arts is where you go to become a good man" has a self-feeding mechanism, so the scumbags who go in - like shitsy in the OP - keep telling themselves they're actually good people and keep recommending martial arts to "fix" other broken young men. And you end up with a situation where good people go in, get mixed up with scumbags, and end up doing things they would otherwise never have done.

The hero worship in the Irish MMA community for McGregor says everything you need to know. What he accomplished in MMA is now irrelevant. He's a violent coke head with a trail of assaults (physical and sexual) left in his wake after becoming famous. Yet the Irish MMA community still sucks his cock.

Actually I looked at this yesterday when it was raised on Twitter, and looking at the guy's IG it's clear that he's an MMA fan and had participated in a couple of fights.

The specifics are irrelevant really, he fits a very clean stereotype of the Irish MMA community - fights, tats, inspirational nonsense, "personal trainer", "nutrition", "de skool of hard knocks", violence, misogyny, toxic masculinity - regardless of how much that triggers you.
