    It was never mandatory as far as I'm aware.

    You can purchase them online, at a bus station or from the driver.

    It's theoretically mandatory for Expressway but I've never seen it enforced, at least on the 100X.

    It's encouraged on Expressway (in order to guarantee a seat), but it is not mandatory.

    Yep, just encouraged. There's only 500 destinations supported on the Bus Eireann website available to purchase. Plenty of stops where it's not possible to buy a ticket on the Bus Eireann website. e.g. Ballymahon town.

Bus Éireann serves over 3,000 locations nationwide so it is not yet possible to buy tickets online for all destinations. The online ecommerce system is undergoing further development and will be expanded over time to include additional destinations.

    We do not take bookings on this route, we operate on a first come first serve basis so tickets can be purchased on the day of departure."
