Importing from Japan

So I have bought a classic from Japan and it will ship in the next week. I have the export cert and the other forms, and the car is being sent to Dublin Port. But whats the actual practical step at the Port? Where do I go I assume to the front office with the documents?

You’ll usually get an email from the shipping agency letting you know your vessel is landing in 2 weeks time or 10 days or whatever. You then contact a customs broker who will clear the car from customs on your behalf.

You just email them the bill of lading, invoice, export cert, proof of payment, screenshot of auction selling price. They will tell you how much you owe and you transfer the money. I can give you a contact for this if you want.

Paying the shipping agency and customs broker is around €200

From there you just wait a few days after the boat lands and your car will usually be cleared. Your given a SAD document and your car is released and can be collected. You just arrive and give your name and it will be on the system that your car is cleared. Best to print to SAD document as this is your proof that its been cleared.

Also just to let you know, if you have only just bought the car recently it probably won’t ship in the next week. I’m having cars sitting at the docks for 6 weeks before they ship. Container prices have increased so everyone is using RoRo now

Great thanks, I bought the car over 2 months ago so it only got a slot on a boat confirmed yesterday. It's all been paid for and I have a good bit of the documentation already. If you have a contact that will help me get over the final step I will take it! I will get the BOL once the boat is underway. It's a classic car so its a fixed VRT of 200e.

This is the customs clearance crowd that I use, they charge me €80 per car. Just contact them once you get an arrival date of your boat. They won’t be able to help until the boat has an arrival date

I used an agent but its still a mixed bag. A bag of bolts may turn up at the port 😂

Have you had any issues getting insured? I can't seem to find any insurer that will give insurance on a jap import

I already bought a car 5 weeks ago and it stay in port KOBE 4 weeks already in Japan , the seller said that he didn't how to deliver the car to Ireland.

ARUACUP company said that there are no space and most likely will not be.

Its normal for a car to sit in the port for a month before shipping.

I’ve been waiting 7 months for my cars so count yourself lucky!

The boats are completely full so expect to be waiting 6 months+

Makes no difference if its a hybrid or not. The battery will die on any car coming from Japan. A simple jump start will solve it

9 volt starts straight away with a quick start unit

i always have one in the car as the 9 volt runs dead within minutes if light are left on mistakenly etc with ignition off

30% buffer in the traction battery, never really goes below that, your car should have at least 3 kWh reserve, plus it will be started to move it on and off the boat, if it has more than 30 % it will use it, if under the engine will kick in, also the engine will start if the car has not been fueled for 4 months.

I would not worry about it.

That's the norm for years now, car transhipment via zeebrugge Rotterdam ect. Shipping times have been longer for me personally this year than last, I've got cars bought in December still not here, compared to cars bought in November that were here in March so your not alone In your wait, but hopefully it's worth it for you when you get your car

Shipping schedule seems back to normal now. I ordered cars in December and they only arrived last month. I ordered a car 6 weeks ago and it’s arriving in a few days.

as if are there serious savings to be made by cutting out the middle man?

That's because the dealers are buying the most basic/cheapest spec of some models eg Honda fit. Higher spec car will cost more money but from what ive found Joe public generally doesn't want to pay the extra few K and just wants the cheapest they can get, but yes there can be a couple of grand to be saved and a better car had doing it yourself
